I tried to deit a previous document but couldn't. I looked on line for answers. I found that I had to take the program off and reload and I did that but it still says activate 365. I don't have 365 I have office home and student. I need to talk to a person please.

    Hello,

Open Word and click the Account icon in the top-right corner. Check the email address currently logged in—it must be the Microsoft account you used to purchase Office 2021.

Word in Office 2021 can show “Activate Microsoft 365” or open files read-only if activation is not correct or if there’s an activation/licensing issue.

    Steps to try:

    1. Check if the product is activated
If Word or other Office apps show Unlicensed Product or activation errors, follow the guidance in Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office to fix activation. See: Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office.
    2. Confirm that editing isn’t blocked by read-only/lock issues
If the file opens but cannot be edited, it may be:
      • Locked from a previous crash, or
      • Opened read-only from OneDrive or another location.
For locked files after a crash, close Word and restart the computer so the lock is released. See: Why can’t I edit this file?. If the file is on OneDrive and OneDrive is full, or if Office is not activated, the file may open read-only. See: Why did my file open read-only?.
    3. If Word shows “stopped working” or similar errors
If Word reports that it “stopped working” when opening or editing documents, older add-ins or a damaged installation may be involved. First install the latest Office updates, then follow the troubleshooting steps in: Troubleshoot installing Office. If needed, run an Online Repair as described in the community answer: Repair an Office application.
    4. If reinstalling did not help
Community experience shows that when simple repair fails, a full uninstall and reinstall can resolve persistent “stopped working” or activation-related issues:
      • Completely uninstall Office.
      • Remove remaining Office folders and related registry entries (on Windows) as described in the community answer.
      • Restart the computer.
      • Reinstall Office from the account where Office Home & Student 2021 is registered.
    5. Contact Microsoft support to talk to a person
For home products like Office Home & Student, Microsoft support experts are available by chat or call back (activation help by phone is included; full callback support is available with Microsoft 365 subscriptions). Use the support options described here: Microsoft 365 Customer Service and Support.
If direct phone contact is needed, use the customer service phone numbers listed here: Customer service phone numbers.

These steps address both the inability to edit documents and the incorrect “Activate 365” prompt when using Office Home & Student 2021.
