I had to change my password in Google, now I cannot get my gmail to sync with my desktop Outlook 2021. I created an app password, as Google suggested but that has not worked either. I have two gmail accounts set up in Outlook, one is still downloading email and syncing.

Changing the Gmail password breaks Outlook’s connection until the stored credentials are updated, and with 2‑step verification enabled Gmail requires an app password instead of the normal password.

Work through these steps for the Gmail account that stopped syncing (leave the working one alone):

    1. Confirm the Gmail account works on the web
      1. Sign in to Gmail in a browser with the new password.
      2. If sign‑in fails, first fix the password at Google using their process: see Google Account Help: Change or reset your password.
    2. Make sure the app password is valid and correctly used
      1. In the Google account that is failing in Outlook, go to the Google security settings and verify that 2‑step verification is turned on.
      2. Generate a new app password specifically for Outlook on this PC (discard the old one): follow Google Account Help: Change or reset your password for access, then use Google’s “App passwords” page.
      3. When Outlook prompts for a password for this Gmail account, paste the 16‑character app password as a single string (no spaces). Do not use the regular Gmail password.
    3. Update the password stored in Outlook 2021 After the provider password/app password is fixed, Outlook must be updated:
      1. Start Outlook 2021.
      2. If prompted for the Gmail password, enter the new app password.
      3. If Outlook does not prompt, remove and re‑add just the affected Gmail account:
        • File → Account Settings → Account Settings → Email tab.
        • Select the failing Gmail account → Remove.
        • Then File → Add Account, enter the Gmail address, and when asked for a password, use the app password.
    4. If Outlook keeps asking for a password
      1. Verify Caps Lock is off and that the username is the full Gmail address.
      2. If Gmail password was changed recently and Outlook keeps prompting, it usually means Outlook still has the old credentials; re‑enter the app password when prompted.
      3. If prompts continue, remove and re‑add the account as above so Outlook uses a clean configuration.

Once the correct Gmail app password is entered and saved for that profile, Outlook 2021 should resume syncing for that account, while the other Gmail account continues to work as before.
