Feature Request – Page Lock / Content Position Lock in OneNote

Dear OneNote Team,

I would like to request a feature that allows users to lock the position of content (text boxes, images, or inserted PDF printouts) on a page.

Currently, when editing a PDF inserted into OneNote or adding additional content, the layout shifts and disturbs the existing alignment. A “lock position” option for specific text or images would help prevent accidental movement and maintain page structure.

Please consider adding a page/content locking feature.

Thank you.

    Dear @Anjali Rathnam,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Your idea is a great suggestion, and I agree that it would be a valuable feature for OneNote. Microsoft places a strong emphasis on customer experience, and all feedback shared by users is taken seriously. Every comment matters, and product teams actively review customer input to help guide future decisions and improvements.

That said, as a Microsoft Q&A forum moderator, I’m not involved in product design decisions and don’t have visibility into or influence over the product development roadmap. While I understand this may not be the outcome you were hoping for, please know that your feedback is both acknowledged and valued.

To ensure your suggestion reaches the appropriate product team, I highly recommend submitting your idea through Microsoft Ideas · Community, which is the official feedback channel reviewed by Microsoft’s engineering and product teams. If multiple customers raise the same idea, it may increase the likelihood of consideration for future updates.

    How to submit your feedback:

    1. Visit Microsoft Ideas · Community
    2. Select Send Feedback
    3. Share your idea and describe how it would improve your experience

OneNote currently does not provide a general “lock position” feature for arbitrary content (such as text containers, images, or PDF printouts) on a page to prevent them from being moved or reflowed during editing.

For education scenarios, OneNote Class Notebook does support locking of pages so students cannot edit them after a certain point, and Teams assignments can automatically lock student pages after turn-in, but this is different from locking the layout or position of individual objects:

    • In OneNote Class Notebook (desktop and other supported clients), teachers can lock student pages via Class Notebook > Review/Review Student Work > Page Locking. This prevents further editing of those pages, not the movement of individual objects on them.
    • When using Class Notebook pages in Microsoft Teams assignments, pages can be set as read-only resources ("Assign page for students to read, but not edit") or automatically locked after students select Turn in. Again, this locks the entire page from editing rather than fixing object positions.

To request a new feature such as object position locking, feedback needs to be submitted through the official feedback channels so it reaches the product team:

    • In OneNote for Windows 10, open the app, select Settings and More (…) > Settings > Feedback. This opens the Feedback Hub, where the suggestion can be entered and submitted directly to the OneNote team.
    • For other OneNote versions and Microsoft 365 apps, feedback can also be submitted via the general Microsoft 365 feedback mechanism described in the documentation ("Provide feedback").

Submitting the request through these channels ensures it is visible to the engineering team and can be considered for future versions of OneNote.
