    Hi chris carter,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how inconvenient this must be, especially since the PC originally came with Windows 11 Home and now won’t activate after Windows 11 Pro was installed. Once we reinstall the correct Home edition, activation and Windows Security should return to normal.

I can also see that Q&A Assist has already shared the installation steps. To make sure nothing is missed, I’ve outlined the full process in more detail below for you:

Step 1: Back up your files

Before starting, please make sure any important files (documents, photos, etc.) are backed up to OneDrive, an external drive or another safe location. This process will remove installed apps.

Step 2: Create the Windows 11 installation USB

    On a working PC:

    1. Go to Download Windows 11
    2. Under Create Windows 11 Installation Media then click Download now
    3. Run the downloaded tool and accept the license terms
    4. Leave Use the recommended options for this PC selected (unless you need a different language)
    5. Choose USB flash drive when asked
    6. Insert a USB drive (8 GB or larger). Please note that anything on the USB will be erased, then select the drive when prompted.
    7. Let the tool finish creating the bootable USB, then safely remove it

Step 3: Reinstall Windows 11 Home on your PC

    1. Plug the USB drive into the affected PC
    2. Restart the PC and open the boot menu (commonly F12, F11, Esc, or F8, depending on the manufacturer)
    3. Select the USB drive to boot from
    4. When Windows Setup loads, choose your language and keyboard layout, then select Next
    5. Click Install now
    6. When asked for a product key, select I don’t have a product key
    7. When prompted to choose an edition, select Windows 11 Home
    8. Accept the license terms and choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)
    9. Select the main drive (usually Drive 0), delete the existing Windows partitions until you see Unallocated space, then select Next
    10. Windows will install and restart several times.

Step 4: Complete setup and activate

After installation finishes, follow the on‑screen setup, connect to the internet, and sign in. Windows should activate automatically using the original Windows 11 Home license tied to your device. Windows Security should also return to normal once activation completes.

If anything doesn’t look right during the process, or you get stuck on a screen you’re unsure about, just let me know what you’re seeing and I’ll help you through it.

To go back to Windows 11 Home, the installed edition must match the license that came with the PC. Since the device originally had Windows 11 Home and now has an unactivated Windows 11 Pro, Windows needs to be reinstalled as Home.

There are two main options supported in the context:

    1. Use a clean installation of Windows 11 Home
      1. Go to the Windows 11 media creation tool page: media creation tool.
      2. Follow the instructions there to create installation media (USB/DVD) for Windows 11 Home.
      3. Boot from the installation media and perform a clean installation of Windows 11 Home.
      4. During setup, when asked for a product key, skip entering a key. Because the PC originally had a Windows 11 Home digital license, Windows should automatically activate as Home after installation completes.
    2. If Windows 11 Pro is installed but the digital license is for Home The activation troubleshooter guidance states that when a digital license is for Windows 11 Home but Windows 11 Pro is installed, the only supported way to activate is to install Windows 11 Home via clean install using the media creation tool, as above.

After reinstalling Windows 11 Home and connecting to the internet, activation should occur automatically using the original Home digital license, restoring normal Windows security features.
