The message indicates that Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication (MFA) is required to complete sign-in to the Power BI service and that identity verification is failing or cannot be completed with the current method.
To get back into the Power BI service account, follow these steps depending on the situation.
- Confirm the verification method works
- Make sure the phone number ending in 80 is active, turned on, and can receive SMS.
- If you receive a text code, enter it exactly as shown.
- If you selected a call option instead of SMS, follow the prompt correctly (for example, press the pound key
#when asked).
If the SMS or call still fails repeatedly, proceed to the next steps.
- Try another verification option (if available)
- On the “Verify your identity” screen, select Other verification options (or similar) if it appears.
- Choose a different method (Authenticator app, alternate phone, or email) if any are configured.
- If another method works, sign in and immediately review/update your security info:
- Go to the Security info page from the My Sign-ins dashboard: Sign in
- Add or update sign-in methods so there is at least one backup method.
- If verification codes or MFA attempts are being blocked If there have been many failed attempts or unusual activity, Microsoft Entra MFA may temporarily block sign-in attempts:
- Wait before trying again; avoid repeated attempts that can extend the block.
- If possible, use a different MFA method (Authenticator app vs SMS) or a different network.
- If suspicious activity is suspected, contact the organization’s IT administrator to review Microsoft Entra sign-in logs and MFA configuration.
- If access to all verification methods is lost If none of the configured MFA methods (phone, app, etc.) are accessible:
- Begin sign-in to the work or school account.
- At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don't have any of these (if shown) and follow the instructions to replace security info.
- If security info is fully replaced, sign-in may be restricted for up to 30 days while the change completes; existing security info (if recovered) can still be used during that period.
- If sign-in is still not possible
- For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s internal support or IT help desk and request:
- MFA reset or Require re-register MFA on the account.
- Assistance with replacing security info or reviewing MFA issues.
- If locked out as the only admin for the tenant, the case must be escalated to Microsoft Data Protection support via a support ticket or phone support so they can verify identity and restore access.
- If the issue is with the account password (not MFA)
- If the password is forgotten, use the organization’s Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) if enabled, or contact the admin to reset the password.
Once MFA is successfully completed and sign-in works again, Power BI service access will resume as normal.
