Dear Microsoft Team,

I understand that it is possible to make call from a SIP phone to a Teams meeting by using SIP Gateways.

Is it possible to call a SIP phone from a Teams client?

Thomas

    Dear Laane, Thomas,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, you would like to make a call to a SIP phone from the Teams client. This is possible, but it is not supported natively without proper configuration. The SIP phone must have a phone number assigned and be registered through the Teams SIP Gateway.

In this scenario, Microsoft Teams does not call the SIP device using a SIP URI. Instead, it treats the device like any other phone and dials its assigned number via PSTN, Direct Routing, or Operator Connect.

You may refer to the SIP Gateway planning for more information. Additionally, you can create a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center if you would like guidance with the setup process.

To raise a support ticket, you can follow the below:

    • Go to the admin center
    • On the bottom right side of the page, select Help & support.

Yes. When a SIP phone is connected to Microsoft Teams through SIP Gateway and assigned to a Teams user with a phone number and PSTN calling enabled, that SIP phone effectively becomes a Teams calling endpoint.

From a Teams client, it is then possible to:

    • Call the SIP phone by calling the associated Teams user’s phone number (PSTN) or Teams contact, because the SIP device “acts as a Teams endpoint” and receives inbound calls for that user.
    • Include the SIP phone user in Teams calls and meetings by dialing their phone number or adding them like any other PSTN/Teams Phone user.

    This requires:

    • A compatible SIP device onboarded to SIP Gateway.
    • The user having Microsoft Phone System and PSTN connectivity, with a phone number and calling enabled.
    • SIP Gateway enabled for that user via Teams calling policy (AllowSIPDevicesCalling = True).

Once configured, calling the SIP phone from Teams is just calling that user/number; the SIP device rings as the Teams endpoint.
