Windows 11 Home verison, HP Laptop, HP Docking Station, Laptop + 3 external monitors

I cannot get 2 of my external monitors to even detect in my system. I have the option to configure multiple monitors, have my lap top set to allow me to close it and just use the three monitors, and know the monitors work because I used them with a Lenovo laptop not two weeks ago. The docking station is brand new and one of the external monitors is working. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to troubleshoot this other than choose "configure multiple monitors"? I can't do that because the other two external monitors are not detected in my Windows 11 system. I appreciate any help anyone can give.

Most likely, this is not a software issue, I need some information about your laptop model to check the specifications for the ports on the laptop.

Click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

Use the working monitor to confirm the basic setup, then troubleshoot step by step focusing on hardware limits and Windows settings.

    1. Confirm Windows is set to extend to multiple displays
    • On the laptop, press Windows logo key + P and choose Extend (not PC screen only / Second screen only / Duplicate). This ensures Windows is trying to use more than one display.
    1. Check that Windows detects all connected displays
    • Select Start > Settings > System > Display.
    • Scroll to Multiple displays and select Detect.
    • If only one external monitor shows up, Windows is not receiving separate signals for the other two.
    1. Verify the dock and graphics limits
    • Many docks and laptops only support a limited number of external monitors from a single USB‑C/Thunderbolt connection. Some docks or USB‑C ports only support:
      • One external monitor over USB‑C/DisplayPort Alt Mode, or
      • One external monitor if the host is not fully Thunderbolt‑capable.
    • If a splitter or adapter is used to connect multiple monitors to a single video output on the dock, it will usually duplicate the same signal, not create independent displays. Only one “logical” monitor is seen by Windows.
      • This matches the behavior where only one external monitor is detected even though multiple are physically connected.
    1. Test each monitor and port individually
    • Disconnect all but one external monitor from the dock.
    • Connect each monitor one at a time to each video output on the dock (HDMI/DP/USB‑C video) and confirm that:
      • Each port on the dock can drive a monitor on its own.
      • Each monitor works when it is the only one connected.
    • If each works alone but not together, the limitation is likely:
      • The HP dock’s maximum number of displays for this laptop, or
      • The laptop’s USB‑C/Thunderbolt implementation (for example, some docks will only use one external monitor if the host is not fully Thunderbolt‑compatible).
    1. Check for known multi‑monitor limitations
    • If the dock is Thunderbolt‑class and the HP laptop’s USB‑C port is not fully Thunderbolt‑compatible, the dock may only support one external monitor from that laptop, regardless of monitor resolution. This is a known behavior with some Thunderbolt docks when connected to non‑matching hosts.
    1. Update drivers and firmware
    • Make sure Windows is fully updated: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
    • Install any HP system, graphics, and dock firmware updates using HP’s tools.
    • If external monitors stopped working after an update, updating or rolling back the display driver can help:
      • Open Device Manager > expand Display adapters.
      • Right‑click the adapter > Properties > Driver tab.
        • Use Roll Back Driver if available, or
        • Use Uninstall device (with Attempt to remove the driver for this device) and then Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
    1. If only one external monitor is ever detected
    • After testing all ports and cables individually, if Windows never shows more than one external monitor at a time in Settings > System > Display, then the combination of HP laptop + HP dock is almost certainly limited to a single external display over that connection.
    • In that case, to use three screens total (laptop + 2 externals) or four (laptop + 3 externals), additional hardware that supports multiple independent video outputs with this laptop would be required (for example, a different dock designed to support multiple monitors with non‑Thunderbolt USB‑C hosts, or an additional USB display adapter if supported by HP).

If all of the above checks are done and the dock still will not present more than one external monitor to Windows, use Feedback Hub to report the issue and include details of the HP laptop model, dock model, and connection layout.
