SMTP is used only for sending mail, not for fetching or downloading messages. To get Yahoo Mail into Outlook, add the Yahoo account in Outlook using its built‑in account setup (which uses IMAP/POP for receiving and SMTP only for sending).
For new Outlook on Windows, add Yahoo like this:
- In Outlook, go to View > View settings or File > Account info.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Select Add Account.
- Enter the Yahoo email address and select Continue.
- On Sync your Yahoo account, select Continue.
- A Yahoo sign‑in page opens in the browser. Sign in and complete any two‑factor authentication.
- When the Yahoo permissions window appears, select Agree.
- When prompted that
https://outlook.office.com wants to open Outlook, select Open.
- Back in Outlook, open the Yahoo account’s Inbox to see the fetched mail.
If automatic setup fails and manual configuration is needed, use Yahoo’s IMAP/POP settings for incoming mail and Yahoo’s SMTP settings only for outgoing mail. The reference table shows Yahoo’s SMTP example as:
- SMTP server:
smtp.mail.yahoo.com
- Port:
25
- SPA: Off
- Authentication required: Off
- Encryption: None
However, Yahoo may require different ports/encryption in practice; obtain the current IMAP/POP/SMTP settings from Yahoo and enter them in Outlook’s manual account setup.
