This is a Re-post from over two years ago that went unanswered.

Why hasn't the web base application been enhanced to support the collapse and expand function?

I like many feel it is frustrating and absorbs unnecessary time trying to figure it out a work around solution.

Would love a response to this concern.

Microsoft is not monitoring these fora for program ideas. To make a suggestion that PowerPoint for the web works differently, please choose Help>Feedback>Make a suggestion. In the Feedback forum, under the Platforms category, click on See all, then select Web. Post your idea, then others can vote on it. Microsoft uses this feedback to prioritize their programming.

PowerPoint for the web supports organizing slides into sections and allows collapsing and expanding those sections in the thumbnail pane, similar to the desktop app.

On Windows (including Microsoft 365 for the web):

    1. Right-click between slides in the thumbnail pane and select Add Section.
    2. Name the section in the Section name box and select Rename.
    3. To collapse or expand a section, select the triangle next to the section name. The number next to the section name shows how many slides are in that section.

This is the currently available way to collapse and expand groups of slides in PowerPoint, including in PowerPoint for the web. For feature changes or enhancements beyond this behavior, feedback can be submitted from within PowerPoint using Help > Feedback so it reaches the product team.
