    Hi aqakc,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I can understand how frustrating this has been, especially after you’ve already tried several fixes and the Xbox app update is still failing with error 0x80073CF9.

When this error keeps coming back, it usually means Windows itself is having trouble completing the app installation, rather than an issue with the Xbox app alone. Let’s try the next two steps that are most effective in cases like this:

Step 1: Repair Windows system files

Sometimes this error is caused by underlying Windows system file corruption that prevents Microsoft Store apps from registering correctly. Running these built‑in repair tools can fix issues that aren’t visible on the surface.

Please open Command Prompt as Administrator, then run the following commands one at a time:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    sfc /scannow

These scans may take a little while to complete. Once both commands finish, restart your PC and then try updating the Xbox app again from the Microsoft Store.

Step 2: Perform an in‑place repair of Windows

If the error still appears after repairing system files, the most reliable next step is an in‑place repair install of Windows 11. This refreshes Windows components that the Microsoft Store and Xbox app depend on, without removing your personal files or installed apps.

*Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides: How to run In-place upgrade in Windows 11 - Microsoft Q&A

I know this step sounds more advanced, but it’s often the cleanest way to resolve persistent Store errors like this when other fixes haven’t worked.

Please let me know how it goes and if you need guidance with the process, I’m here to help.

Follow these steps in order, testing the Xbox app update after each major step:

    1. Run the Store reset tool
      1. Press Windows key + R.
      2. Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
      3. Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen automatically.
      4. In Store, go to Library and try updating the Xbox app again.
    2. Check Windows Update and restart
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      2. Install all available updates and restart the PC.
      3. After restart, open Microsoft Store → LibraryGet updates and try the Xbox app again.
    3. Update Microsoft Store itself
      1. Open Microsoft Store from Start.
      2. Go to Library > Get updates.
      3. Let Store update itself and any pending Store infrastructure apps.
      4. When finished, retry the Xbox app update.
    4. Repair or reset the Xbox app
      1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      2. Find Xbox.
      3. Select Advanced options.
      4. Click Repair; if that fails, click Reset.
      5. Try updating/launching from Store again.
    5. Repair or reset Microsoft Store
      1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      2. Find Microsoft Store.
      3. Select Advanced options.
      4. Click Repair; if that fails, click Reset.
      5. Open Store and retry the Xbox app update.
    6. Check Microsoft Store Install Service
      1. Press Windows key + S, type services.msc, and open it.
      2. Find Microsoft Store Install Service.
      3. If Status is Disabled or blank, set Startup type to Automatic, click Start, then OK.
      4. If it is Running, right‑click and choose Restart.
      5. Retry the update in Store.
    7. Temporarily remove VPN/third‑party security software
If a third‑party VPN or antivirus is installed, temporarily uninstall or fully disable it, then retry the Xbox app update from Store. Re‑enable or reinstall security software after testing.
    8. Reinstall Gaming Services (if Xbox games fail to install/launch)
If game installs/launches also fail, reinstall Gaming Services:
      1. Open PowerShell as Administrator.
      2. Run: get-appxpackage *gamings*
      3. Note the GamingServices package full name.
      4. Run: remove-package <package fullname from step 2 for the gamingservices package>
      5. Open the Xbox app and start installing any game; this will reinstall Gaming Services from Microsoft Store.

If all steps above fail and the error persists only for Store apps, back up important data and consider an in‑place repair of Windows 11 or contacting Microsoft Support for deeper Store component repair.
