For issues after a recent Windows 11 update where Start, Wi‑Fi, and Settings stop working, the supported recovery options are:
- Try Windows Update troubleshooting
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter:
- Select Start > Settings > System.
- Select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Locate Windows Update and select Run.
- Ensure the device is plugged in and connected to the internet (if possible):
- Select Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi.
- Verify network status and reconnect if needed.
- Use Windows recovery options if the system is unstable If the system is not working well after an update and basic troubleshooting does not help, use the built‑in recovery tools:
- System Restore (if a restore point exists and Windows or the recovery environment is accessible):
- Restart into the Choose an option screen.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Follow the on‑screen instructions to restore to a point before the problematic update.
- Reset this PC (keep files):
- Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
- Choose Keep my files to reinstall Windows while preserving personal files. Apps and settings will be removed.
- Choose Cloud download (recommended) or Local reinstall.
- Press Windows logo key + L.
- On the lock screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
- On Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- When Windows does not start or is severely broken If Windows will not start or remains unusable after the update, use recovery options appropriate to the device:
- On Surface devices:
- If Windows starts but is unstable: use Reset this PC as above.
- If Windows does not start: use a recovery drive to reinstall Windows as described in the Surface recovery guidance.
- For general Windows 10/11 PCs:
- Use Startup Repair or Reset from the Windows Recovery Environment if the system fails to boot or keeps loading.
These options are designed to fix problems caused by updates or other changes while either preserving files (System Restore, Reset with “Keep my files”) or fully reinstalling Windows when necessary.
