    Hello Fran Taylor,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum!

Have you had time to check out the Q&A Assist's proposed response? If you have already reviewed those suggestions and still cannot connect, it is highly likely that your account requires a unique App Password to function within Outlook Classic.

Please follow these steps to generate the code and connect your account:

Step 1: Enable 2FA and Generate the Code

    1. Log in to your Yahoo Account Security page.
    2. Locate Two-step verification and toggle it On. Follow the prompts to verify your phone number or recovery email.
    3. Once 2FA is active, the Generate App Password (or "Manage App Passwords") option will appear.
    4. Click Get Started, enter "Outlook Desktop" as the app name, and click Generate
    5. Copy the 16-character code that appears

Note: If you find that the "App Password" feature is not visible or says "not available" on your Yahoo security page, it is typically because you haven't enabled Two-Step Verification yet. Yahoo requires this added layer of security before it will allow you to generate app-specific codes.

Step 2: Add the Account to Outlook

    1. In Outlook, go to File > Add Account
    2. Enter your email address, select Advanced Options, and check "Let me set up my account manually."
    3. Choose IMAP
    4. When Outlook asks for your password, paste the 16-character App Password you just generated instead of your regular Yahoo password.

I hope this helps you bypass the connection error! Should you continue to experience difficulties after completing these steps, please do not hesitate to reply to this thread. I am more than happy to provide further assistance.

Use the built-in account wizard in Outlook Classic instead of manual server/port setup, and make sure the account is added as an IMAP account with Yahoo’s modern sign-in flow.

Follow these steps in Outlook Classic:

    1. In Outlook Classic, select File.
    2. Select + Add Account.
    3. Enter the full Yahoo email address and select Connect.
    4. A Yahoo sign-in window opens. Sign in with the Yahoo email and password, and complete any two-factor authentication prompts.
    5. When the Yahoo permissions window appears, select Agree to allow Outlook access.
    6. When Outlook reports the account was successfully added, select Done.
    7. In the folder list, expand the Yahoo account and select Inbox to confirm mail sync.

If Outlook does not prompt for a password or keeps failing when using IMAP:

    1. On the IMAP details page, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
    2. If it still fails, close Outlook.
    3. Open Control Panel in Windows.
    4. Select Mail > Email Accounts….
    5. On the Email tab, select New.
    6. Enter name, Yahoo email address, and password in the Password and Retype Password boxes, then select Next.
    7. Follow the prompts to complete setup. Enter the password again if prompted.
    8. When account setup completes, select Finish and reopen Outlook to test.

If connection issues persist even with correct settings, contact Yahoo support or check their help pages for any additional requirements (such as app passwords or security settings) before adding the account again.
