Printer Scanning Ability Not Recognized even though Windows Protected Print Mode enabled

Hello, I can scan one page at a time; however, I used to be able to scan a multi-page document into one file. Is my scanning capability now limited due to Windows? The scanning part of my printer is not Mopria certified; however, the protected print mode is not enabled.

Can you help with this?

Thank you,

    Hi DENNIS FINNEY

Please give a try to NAPS2, it'll provide multi page scanning: https://www.naps2.com/

    Hi DENNIS FINNEY,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

I understand why this is confusing, especially with the new Windows Protected Print Mode terminology. However, it’s unlikely for Windows to limit your scanning ability in this case.

Since Windows Protected Print Mode is not enabled, it has no impact on scanning at all. Plus, like its name suggests, this feature only affects printing, so it wouldn’t remove multi‑page capability.

Since you mentioned scanning worked before, was there any notable change to the system before the multi‑page ability stopped working? For example, did you install an update, add new software, or make another system change?

Overall, when Windows uses a basic or inbox scan app, it often supports single‑page scans only, even though the hardware can do more. You should check out the printer manufacturer’s manual and specific scan software for more details.

If you want, I can help you identify which Windows scan app vs manufacturer app you’re currently using. Let me know the model of your printer!

Scanning capability is not limited by Windows protected print mode in this case, because protected print mode is currently disabled. Windows protected print mode affects printers and some software printers, but not all scanners are required to be Mopria certified, and non‑Mopria scanners can still work when protected print mode is off.

    From the provided information:

    • Windows protected print mode, when enabled, removes unsupported printers and some software printers, and only allows devices that use the modern print platform.
    • Not all scanners are compatible with Windows protected print mode, and Mopria certification is the compatibility indicator for scanners.
    • Since protected print mode is not enabled on this system, it is not the cause of the loss of multi‑page scanning into a single file.

The change in behavior (only being able to scan one page at a time) is therefore unrelated to Windows protected print mode and is more likely due to:

    • Changes or limitations in the printer’s own scan software or driver.
    • Using a simpler scan application (such as a basic built‑in scan app) that only supports single‑page scans, instead of the printer manufacturer’s full‑feature scanning software.

To restore multi‑page scanning into one file, use the printer manufacturer’s full scan utility or another scanning application that supports multi‑page jobs, and ensure the printer’s scan driver/software is correctly installed. Protected print mode can remain disabled in this scenario.
