How to automatically record Teams meetings?

Hi,

When scheduling a Teams meeting, under Meeting Options, I used to have the ability to set up the meeting so that it automatically recorded. However, now when I go to Meeting Options, I do not see this feature.

Was this automatically record feature removed by Microsoft? Is there a reason I am no longer seeing this?

Thanks.

    Hi @Patrick G,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand that you are unable to locate the Record automatically or Record and transcribe automatically options within your Microsoft Teams meeting settings and are looking for a technical explanation and resolution.

Regarding your concerns, Microsoft has not removed the automatic recording feature from the platform; however, its visibility is strictly governed by administrative policies and, in some recent updates, specific licensing tiers for advanced recording controls. There are a few primary reasons why this option may have disappeared from your view:

    • The Record and transcribe automatically option in Microsoft Teams is a core feature, but its visibility in Meeting options depends on your organization’s configuration and licensing. Often, this toggle is missing because an administrator has restricted Recording & transcription settings within the Teams Admin Center or applied a Sensitivity label that mandates manual recording for compliance.
    • User's image
    • Additionally, specific licenses, such as Microsoft 365 Education A1, do not support automated recording. I also recommend checking if you are scheduling via the Outlook add-in, as certain advanced features may only render correctly within the native Teams Calendar app. To resolve this, please verify your license status and meeting policy assignments with your IT Administrator.

To identify the root cause, I recommend performing the following checks:

    1. Verify via Teams web app: Log in to the Teams web interface, navigate to the Calendar, and create a test meeting. Check Meeting options there to determine if the issue is isolated to your local desktop client.
    2. License validation: Navigate to File > Office Account (or check your profile in the M365 portal) to confirm your current license SKU. Ensure it supports automated recording features.
    3. Check for template overrides: When scheduling the meeting, ensure you are not accidentally applying a Sensitivity label or a specific Meeting template that restricts recording.

If the toggle remains missing after these checks, please reach out to your Teams/Microsoft 365 admin and ask them to confirm:

    • Meeting recording is allowed for your account (meeting policy settings), and
    • Whether any auto‑recording policy / meeting template / sensitivity label is restricting or hiding that option.

I hope this response has helped address your concern. Please feel free to reply if you have any further questions, I would be happy to assist further.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. I look forward to continuing the conversation.

The automatic recording feature still exists, but visibility and defaults are now controlled by admin policy, templates, and (for some orgs) licensing.

Key points based on current behavior:

    1. Where the setting lives now
The option is still called Record and transcribe automatically and is in the meeting’s Meeting options under Recording & transcription.
      • When turned on, “recording and transcription will start automatically when the meeting begins.”
      • This option is disabled if Who can record and transcribe is set to No one.
    2. Why the toggle may have disappeared There are several admin-level controls that can remove or hide this option for organizers:
      • Auto recording policy (Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy -AutoRecording)
Admins can control whether organizers even see the Record and transcribe automatically setting:
        • If AutoRecording is turned off, “organizers don't see the setting and can’t set meetings to record automatically.”
        • If AutoRecording is turned on, the setting is visible but Off by default for meetings; organizers must turn it on per meeting.
For webinars and town halls, the setting is On by default.
      • Education A1 license limitation
“Customers with a Microsoft 365 Education A1 subscription don't have the option to record and transcribe meetings automatically.”
Users with only an Edu A1 license “can record manually but can't use meeting options to auto-record.” If licensing changed to A1-only, the auto-record toggle disappears.
      • Copilot / transcription interaction
In meeting options, Who can record and transcribe and Allow Copilot interact with the auto-record setting:
        • The Record and transcribe automatically option “will be turned off if Who can record and transcribe is set to No one.”
        • The Who can record and transcribe option “isn't available if Record and transcribe automatically is turned on.”
If an admin or template forces a combination of these, the organizer may no longer be able to change auto-record.
      • Templates and sensitivity labels
Admins can enforce automatic recording via:
        • Meeting templates (for specific types of meetings, webinars, or town halls).
        • Sensitivity labels (for certain categories like “sensitive meetings”).
If a template/label is configured to control auto-record, the organizer may not see or be able to change the toggle.
    3. Events that auto-record by default
      • “By default, town halls and webinars are recorded automatically.”
      • Users “can stop their events from being automatically recorded with the Record and transcribe setting in their meeting options,” unless an admin/template has locked it.
    4. Compliance recording vs. convenience auto-record
      • If a compliance recording policy is applied, meetings may be recorded automatically by a third-party solution regardless of the convenience auto-record toggle. In that case, the usual auto-record UI is not what controls recording.
    5. What likely changed in this scenario If the auto-record toggle used to be visible and now is not, the most probable causes are:
      • A Teams meeting policy change where AutoRecording was turned off for the user or group, which “turn[s] off auto recording [so] organizers don't see the setting and can’t set meetings to record automatically.”
      • A licensing change to Microsoft 365 Education A1 only.
      • A new meeting template or sensitivity label that locks recording behavior.

To restore the previous behavior, a Teams admin must review:

    • The user’s Teams meeting policy (especially the -AutoRecording setting via Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy).
    • The user’s license (to confirm it is not limited to Education A1 for auto-record).
    • Any meeting templates or sensitivity labels applied to the meetings that may be controlling or hiding the auto-record option.
