So I bought a second hand PC and I there were some problems so I installed a new windows (my version is windows 10 btw). At first I installed windows 10 home and it keeps saying "We cant activate Windows on this device because you don't have a valid digital license or product key." I even tried troubleshooting and it keeps telling me "We weren't able to activate Windows on this device." I also even tried manually putting the product key and it says "The last product key I entered can't be used on this copy of Windows." Now I don't know what to do cause the last information of this PC is deleted cause I installed 2 times already... What do I do please help!!!!

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

    1. May I please know whether you have a product key for Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro?
    2. Did you purchase this product key from a third‑party retailer?

Since this is a second‑hand device, we cannot confirm whether it originally came with a preinstalled Windows license (OEM) integrated into the motherboard. If it has an OEM license, Windows should automatically detect the license and activate it.

In this situation, if you could let us know which product key you have and share any previous details about the device, it would help us determine the best way to activate Windows on your PC.

In addition this, type the command below in an elevated command prompt and post a screenshot of the resulting dialog box.

    slmgr.vbs /dlv

On a second‑hand PC with a fresh Windows 10 install, activation will only work if there is a valid product key or digital license for that device and edition. In this case, the messages indicate that the key being used is not valid for this installation, so activation cannot proceed with that key.

Key points from the scenario and what to do next:

    1. Why activation is failing
      • Windows 10 requires either:
        • A valid 25‑character product key, or
        • A valid digital license linked to the device/Microsoft account.
      • On pre‑owned PCs, the previous owner may have:
        • Used the same key on more PCs than allowed, or
        • Installed a different edition or key that is no longer valid.
      • The error “The last product key I entered can't be used on this copy of Windows” means the key is not acceptable for this edition/installation (for example, wrong edition, blocked, or already used beyond its limit).
    2. Check whether there is any valid key or license
      • If the PC originally came with Windows preinstalled, the seller should provide:
        • The original Windows DVD (if applicable), and
        • The original product key (on packaging, a card, or a Certificate of Authenticity sticker).
      • If these are not available, and the key already tried does not work, that key cannot be used to activate this installation.
    3. If no working product key or digital license is available
      • A new license is required. On Windows 10:
        1. Select Start.
        2. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
        3. Select Go to Store.
        4. In Microsoft Store, purchase a Windows 10 digital license and complete activation.
    4. If a different edition was originally installed
      • If the PC was previously activated with a different edition (for example, Windows 10 Pro vs Home) and a different key was used during repair/reinstall, activation can fail.
      • In that case, reinstall the original edition that matches the valid key (if that key is available) and enter that product key during or after installation.
    5. If the PC had significant hardware changes
      • If the motherboard or other major hardware was replaced before the sale, the original license may no longer match this hardware. A new license is then required.

If the seller cannot provide a valid product key or original media, and the current key is rejected, the only supported path is to buy a new Windows 10 product key or digital license and activate with that.
