Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I am experiencing an issue with my laptop that is requesting a BitLocker recovery key. However, when I log into my Microsoft account to retrieve the key, no BitLocker recovery key is listed under my devices.

I have already tried the following:

Logged into my Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

Verified that I am using the correct Microsoft account

Checked all possible email accounts associated with my device

Unfortunately, the recovery key does not appear in my account.

Could you please assist me in locating my BitLocker recovery key or advise me on the next steps to regain access to my laptop?

    Dear Sai Prasad Desham

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand your laptop is prompting for a BitLocker recovery key, but when you sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey, it shows “No BitLocker recovery key found for this device.”  To help narrow this down, could you please share a bit more information?

    • Do you sign into Windows with a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account?
    • Is this laptop owned/provided by a company/school, or is it a personal device?
    • Was the laptop bought used/gifted or set up by someone else (store/IT/family member)?

Please note: The BitLocker recovery key is created when encryption is enabled. If the recovery key was not saved to the correct account or your organization’s directory, it cannot be generated again. Without the correct recovery key, the encrypted drive cannot be unlocked to access the existing data.

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

    1. Note the Key ID on the BitLocker screen
    • On the BitLocker recovery screen, please note the “Key ID” shown (this is not the 48-digit key).
    1. Re-check the recovery key page using the correct Microsoft account
    • Sign in here and look for a key that matches the Key ID: https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
    • If you have more than one personal Microsoft account, repeat the check with any other account that may have been used on this laptop.
    1. Consider whether a different account was used during the first setup
    • Was the laptop bought used, gifted, or set up for you (store/family)? If encryption was enabled during the initial setup under a different Microsoft account, the recovery key may be stored under that original account.
    1. Check other places you may have saved the key
    • A printed copy
    • A text file saved to USB/another drive
    • OneDrive (if you saved it there)
    • Any email or document where you may have stored it

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope the steps above help you locate the correct BitLocker recovery key and regain access to your laptop as soon as possible. Wishing you a smooth recovery process and the best possible outcome for keeping your data intact while restoring access to Windows.

Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. If no key appears for the device in any Microsoft account that was used on it, the only available options are to continue searching all locations where the key might have been saved, or to reset the device and accept data loss.

Use the BitLocker recovery key ID shown on the blue recovery screen (first 8 digits) to match against any keys you find.

Check every possible location where the key could have been stored when BitLocker was enabled:

    1. Microsoft personal account
      • Sign in from another device to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
      • Verify all personal Microsoft accounts that might have been used to set up or sign in to the laptop.
      • Match the recovery key ID from the blue screen with any key listed.
    2. Work or school (organization) account
      • If the device was ever joined to an organization or signed in with a work/school account, the key may be stored there.
      • From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey and sign in with the work/school account.
      • Select Devices, expand the affected device, then choose View BitLocker Keys and match by key ID.
      • If no key is shown or access is blocked, contact the organization’s IT/helpdesk; they may have the key in Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory.
    3. Other self-recovery locations
      • Printed copy: Check any printed documents kept with important PC paperwork.
      • USB flash drive: Insert any USB drives that might have been used when BitLocker was turned on and look for a .txt file containing the 48‑digit key.
      • Other admin account: If another person set up the device or enabled BitLocker, the key may be in that person’s Microsoft or organization account.

If none of these locations contain the key and IT cannot provide it, BitLocker cannot be bypassed. To use the laptop again, the drive must be reset or reimaged:

    • For unmanaged/home devices, use Windows recovery options to reset the PC, which will remove all files on the encrypted drive.
    • For managed/Surface devices, IT can reimage the device using a recovery image or USB recovery drive, which also erases existing data.

There is no supported method to unlock a BitLocker‑protected drive without the correct recovery key.
