Which particular license do you have? Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family certainly lets you install the full desktop apps on a PC (and/or Mac). You are actually able to install on multiple devices (and even share with other users, if you have 365 Family or Premium).

However, if you are saying that you are using the free web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, then your observation is correct. Functionality is very limited on the web.

    Dear @Mary E Zando,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
Since you haven’t specified your account type, I may not be able to provide an exact solution right now. However, assuming you're using a work/school account, here are a few common reasons why you might not be able to find the install apps:

    • Your account does not have a desktop-app license. This is common for Microsoft 365 Basic, Business Essentials, or E1 licenses, especially with school accounts.
    • Your administrator has not assigned the license yet.

If any of these apply to your situation, please confirm your subscription type or reach out to your Microsoft 365 admin to assign the correct license. If you don't know who your IT administrator is, please refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support
Additionally, please refer to the steps provided by the Q&A Assist above to see if it help resolve your issue.

Should you have any more questions or need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I'm always here to help. I look forward to your response.

To download and install the full desktop version of Microsoft Word (as part of Microsoft 365 or Office, not just the web apps), use one of these supported methods.

If using a Microsoft 365 subscription (education or personal/business):

    1. Go to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
    2. Sign in with the account associated with the subscription (school, work, or Microsoft account).
    3. If signed in with a Microsoft account:
      • On the Microsoft 365 Apps page, select Install apps.
      • Select Install (or Install apps > depending on the version).
      • This downloads the Office installer, which includes Word with full desktop functionality supported by that plan.
    4. If signed in with a work or school account:
      • After sign-in, follow the prompts to complete download and installation.
      • If there is no install option, the account might not have a desktop-app license assigned; the Microsoft 365 admin must assign a license before installation is available.

If using a one-time purchase of Office (non‑subscription, such as Office Home & Student, Home & Business, or Professional):

    1. Make sure the product key has been redeemed and linked to a Microsoft account at https://microsoft365.com/setup (if not already done).
    2. Once redeemed, go to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/apps and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
    3. From the Apps or Subscriptions area, choose the Office product and select Install to download the installer.
    4. Run the downloaded setup file and complete installation; Word will be installed as part of the suite.

Key points about functionality and devices:

    • Microsoft 365 subscriptions allow installation on all devices and being signed in on up to five at the same time.
    • One-time purchase Office (perpetual license) installs on only one computer, though it can be transferred to another owned computer in case of hardware failure or replacement.
    • If the web version of Word (Word for the web) does not have required features, installing the desktop apps via the steps above provides the full feature set supported by the chosen product.

If installation options are missing or sign-in is blocked:

    • For school or work accounts, sign-in might be blocked by an admin policy or a license might not be assigned. In that case, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator to enable sign-in or assign a desktop-app license.

Once installed, Word will be available from the Start menu (Windows) as a full desktop application.
