Lost access to my 365 account

I purchased Microsoft 365 Personal in February 2026 and had been using it successfully until my laptop crashed last week. I followed the instructions on my Microsoft account to revive the system. Then, Windows 10 was automatically replaced by Windows 11 and my 365 disappeared, as did my purchase record on my account. Therefore, I have no access to the required installation code. Now I am being prompted to purchase 365 (again) to continue using the platform products. I have proof of the February purchase. I have the PayPal documentation indicating the Microsoft Corporation received my payment. Microsoft completed that transaction by granting me access to 365, which I had been successfully using 365 up until the crash. Best Buy technicians scanned for malware and removed any threats in hopes that when I do start using Windows 11 and 365 again, the programs will work as they should. All that said, what are my options for having 365 reinstalled as soon as possible without paying for it again? How can I get a new code from Microsoft without paying again? Thanks for your guidance.

    Hello James Altieri,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

I understand that you are having issue with Microsoft 365 Personal. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you go through this situation.

You shouldn’t need to pay again, and in most cases you don’t need any “installation code” for Microsoft 365 Personal. The subscription is tied to the Microsoft account you used when you bought it. I suggest you try this:

    1. Verify the subscription is attached to the account you’re signing into
    • Go to Microsoft account Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account you used for the purchase.
    • If you see Microsoft 365 Personal there, you’re good—proceed to reinstall (next section).
    • If you don’t see it, the support guidance is made sure you’re signed into the correct Microsoft account associated with the subscription.

Practical note: this “wrong account” scenario is common after a Windows reinstall (people accidentally sign into a different Microsoft account than the one used to buy Microsoft 365). The official steps emphasize signing in with the account associated with the subscription.

    1. Reinstall Microsoft 365 from your Subscriptions page (no new purchase needed)

If your subscription is visible, reinstall like this:

    • Go to the Microsoft account dashboard and select Sign in.
    • Sign in with the Microsoft account you used to set up Microsoft 365.
    • Select Subscriptions (left pane).
    • Select Install Microsoft 365 (upper right).
    • Choose language + version, then select Install.
    • Run the downloaded installer (OfficeSetup.exe) and complete setup until you see “You’re all set”.
    • Open Word/Excel while connected to the internet; accept license terms and sign in if prompted to activate

Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,

Microsoft 365 Personal does not use an installation code in normal use; installation and activation are tied to the Microsoft account that was used to buy the subscription. After a Windows reinstall or upgrade, Microsoft 365 must be reinstalled and reactivated by signing in with that same account.

Based on the described situation, the key steps and options are:

    1. Confirm the correct Microsoft account
If the purchase record and subscription no longer appear under the currently used account, it is likely that Microsoft 365 Personal was bought with a different Microsoft account (email address). Use the guidance for locating the account associated with Microsoft 365:
      • Follow the steps in “I forgot the account I use with Microsoft 365” to determine whether the product is a Microsoft 365 for home subscription and which email address was used when it was first bought or activated. The account used at purchase time is the one that controls installation and subscription management.
      • If the email/username has been forgotten, use the Look up your Microsoft account process described under “Recover lost access to your Microsoft account” to find the correct Microsoft account.
    2. Recover access to the Microsoft account, if needed
If the correct account is known but cannot be signed into:
      • Use the Reset your password option if the password is forgotten.
      • If the username or account is not recognized, use the Sign-in Helper tool and related recovery steps under “Steps to recover your Microsoft account.”
Once access to the correct Microsoft account is restored, the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription and purchase record should appear again under that account’s services/subscriptions.
    3. Reinstall Microsoft 365 from the account portal
After signing in with the correct Microsoft account that shows the active Microsoft 365 Personal subscription:
      • Go to the Microsoft account services/subscriptions area (as described in “Using product keys with Microsoft 365” and “Why do I need an account to sign in to Microsoft 365 or Office?”).
      • From there, select the Microsoft 365 subscription and choose the option to install or reinstall the apps on the Windows 11 device.
      • Installation and activation will complete by signing in; no new product key or code is required.
    4. If Microsoft 365 is prompting for a product key
When prompted for a product key in an app:
      • Use the Microsoft account sign-in instead of entering a product key. The documentation explicitly states that Microsoft 365 apps should be activated by signing in with the Microsoft account used to buy Microsoft 365, not by entering a code.
    5. When a product key is actually needed
A new product key is generally not issued for Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptions. Product keys are only relevant in specific cases (for example, Workplace Discount Program or volume license scenarios), which do not match a standard Microsoft 365 Personal purchase. For a normal home subscription, the solution is always to:
      • Identify the correct Microsoft account associated with the February 2026 purchase.
      • Regain access to that account if necessary.
      • Reinstall and activate by signing in with that account.

If, after confirming all possible Microsoft accounts and completing the account recovery steps, the subscription still does not appear under any account, the next step is to contact Microsoft support directly with the proof of purchase so they can investigate and associate the subscription correctly. The context provided includes a link for talking to a customer support agent under the Microsoft account sign-in help.
