Example.

Im searching for an email from "HP Instant Ink".

Email = HPInstantInk ******@instantink.hpsmart.com

Subject = Review your HP Instant Ink statement.

Body = Hi Dan,

Your HP Instant Ink monthly summary for your HP DeskJet 2810e All-in-One Printer is ready! Check out the overview of your subscription and most recent charges below:

If i search "instant ink", I get multiple email showing highlights that it found "instant ink" in the body, in the subject and in the email.

If i search "hp", i get nothing, although clearly "hp" is listed.

Why? Is this by fault or by design?

I have other examples.

    Outlook on the web search is working as designed, but the behavior depends on what is actually typed and how the query is interpreted.

    Key points for Outlook on the web (including Outlook.com / live.outlook.com):

    1. Basic search behavior
      • Typing text in the Search box searches across multiple fields (subject, sender, recipients, and message body) and returns matches.
      • Results can be refined using Filters (Folders, From, To, Subject, Keywords, Date from, Attachments).
      • In the example, searching for instant ink returns results because that exact phrase or those words appear clearly in the subject/body/address.
    2. Why hp may not return results
      • Outlook search can treat very short strings or common fragments differently from longer, more distinctive terms. In some cases, very short tokens (like “hp”) may be ignored or de‑prioritized, especially when embedded in longer words or addresses.
      • If “hp” only appears as part of a larger token (for example, in a domain name or combined with other characters) and not as a separate word in the subject/body, the search may not surface those messages with a simple hp query.
      • This is not exposed as an error; it is a side effect of how indexing and tokenization work in the service.
    3. How to improve the search
      • Use more specific text that appears as a distinct word in the message, such as:
        • "HP Instant Ink" (with quotes) to search for that exact phrase.
        • subject:"HP Instant Ink" to target the subject line specifically.
        • from:instantink.hpsmart.com or from:"HP Instant Ink" to target the sender.
      • In Outlook on the web, Advanced Query Search (AQS) keywords can refine results:
        • From:"HP Instant Ink"
        • Subject:"HP Instant Ink"
        • Body:"HP Instant Ink"
    4. Using filters and AQS in Outlook on the web
      • Type the query in the Search box and press Enter.
      • Select Filters to narrow by From, To, Subject, Keywords, Date from, and Attachments.
      • AQS examples relevant to this scenario:
        • From:HPInstantInk
        • Subject:"Instant Ink"
        • Body:"Instant Ink"

    In summary, the difference between instant ink and hp is due to how Outlook’s search engine indexes and interprets short tokens. Using AQS and more specific phrases (for example, "HP Instant Ink", From:HPInstantInk) will reliably return the messages in question.

    It doesnt really make sense and seems like a conveulted way to search for stuff, but iv confirmed that it does resolve the issue.

    Its not how it should work though as it differs to the local Outlook search. It should be standardised across both interfaces.
