My wife has an active Microsoft 365 subscription updated annually. I want to use that plan and not have an email or account with Microsoft on my laptop. How do I do this?

Assuming that your wife's subscription is Microsoft 365 Family (or 365 Premium), she can invite you to share her subscription (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/share-your-microsoft-365-family-or-premium-subscription-b389b9ce-3ae3-4a82-9017-39d79972fcba). You will have to cancel your own subscription first, though.

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. I understand how confusing it feels when your wife already has a Microsoft 365 Family subscription, but you would prefer not to create or use a Microsoft account on your laptop just to access the apps. It is completely reasonable to want to use the subscription without adding extra accounts you do not need.

Microsoft 365 Family requires each person who uses the subscription to sign in with their own Microsoft account because the license is tied to individual identities rather than devices. This sign‑in is what verifies your eligibility as a shared member and enables activation of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneDrive. Without a Microsoft account, the apps cannot activate, and the subscription cannot be shared, which is why Microsoft asks each family member to have their own account even if they do not plan to use email or other services. Creating a Microsoft account does not require using the email for communication; it simply acts as the license identity.

To understand what will work best for you, would you prefer creating a minimal Microsoft account only for activation purposes, or would you like guidance on using the apps without signing into Windows itself? Both options are possible depending on how you want your laptop set up.

Please feel free to follow up with your preference, and I will walk you through the simplest way to use the Microsoft 365 Family subscription on your laptop without adding anything extra you do not want.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

To use a Microsoft 365 Family (or Premium) subscription without keeping a Microsoft account signed in on the laptop, two things are required:

    1. The subscription owner (your wife) must share the subscription with you.
    2. A Microsoft account is still required to receive the shared license, but Windows on the laptop can use a local account so it does not “feel” like a Microsoft sign-in on the device.

    From the available information:

    • A Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Premium subscription can be shared with other people. The owner manages sharing at https://account.microsoft.com/services under the Sharing tab.
    • Sharing is controlled entirely by the subscription owner; canceling or changing subscriptions does not remove Microsoft accounts themselves.
    • If the owner wants to stop sharing with someone, they use Stop sharing on the Sharing page.

    Practical approach based on this:

    1. Your wife signs in at https://account.microsoft.com/services and opens Sharing.
    2. She adds you as a person to share the Microsoft 365 Family/Premium subscription with (this step requires that you have a Microsoft account identity to assign the license to).
    3. On your laptop, you can:
      • Use a local Windows account for signing into Windows (no Microsoft account required for the PC login itself), and
      • Sign in only inside Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.) with the Microsoft account that your wife shared the subscription to, just for activation.

This way, the PC login does not use a Microsoft account, but the Office apps still use a Microsoft account identity to consume the shared subscription, which is required for Microsoft 365 licensing.

If at any point your wife wants to stop sharing the subscription with you, she can go back to Sharing and select Stop sharing next to your name.
