Help. Purchased the pro upgrade twice on accident. I also need to figure out how to install it and get a refund for one of the charges.

    Hi CAry Childress,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. Since Q&A Assist has already shared an initial answer, I’ll summarize it here to make things a bit clearer.

First, about installing the Pro upgrade: There’s actually nothing extra you need to install. Once the Pro upgrade is purchased, it’s automatically linked to the Microsoft account used during checkout. As long as you’re signed in to your device with that same account, the upgrade should activate on its own.

You can double‑check this by signing in at account.microsoft.com/services and confirming that the Pro upgrade shows as active under Services & subscriptions. If it’s listed there, the upgrade is already applied to your device and ready to use.

Regarding the duplicate charge and refund: Only one Pro upgrade can be applied to an account, so the second charge is considered a duplicate purchase. To request a refund for that extra charge, please return to account.microsoft.com/services, locate the duplicate Pro purchase and select Manage > Cancel (or Upgrade or cancel, depending on what you see). When you cancel the duplicate purchase, Microsoft will automatically check whether it’s eligible for a refund and guide you through the next steps on screen.

If you don’t see a refund option after canceling or if anything looks unclear, the fastest way to resolve this is to contact Microsoft Support directly: enter “Duplicate charge” as the issue and click Get help. When prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. Next, choose Windows under Product & services, then select Manage my subscriptions under Category, and choose Chat with a support agent in your web browser. This will connect you with a billing specialist who can review the duplicate charge and assist with the refund. It’s also helpful to have your order confirmation emails or order numbers ready when you reach out.

I hope this helps get everything sorted quickly. If you have any questions along the way or need further guidance, feel free to let me know. I’m happy to help.

To resolve the duplicate Pro upgrade purchase and request a refund for one of the charges, follow these steps:

    1. Check which subscription was actually applied
      1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the purchases.
      2. Under Services & subscriptions, review the list of active subscriptions and their billing dates. This shows which Pro/Microsoft 365/other subscriptions are currently active and whether there are duplicates.
    2. Cancel the extra subscription and trigger refund eligibility check
      • If the Pro upgrade is a Microsoft 365 or other Microsoft subscription purchased from Microsoft:
        1. On the Services & subscriptions page, find the extra/duplicate subscription and select Manage.
        2. On the next page, select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on what is shown).
        3. Follow the on-screen steps to complete cancellation. This process will also determine whether a refund is available for that subscription.
      • Refund rules (high level):
        • For Microsoft 365 and other Microsoft subscriptions bought from Microsoft, refund eligibility is evaluated when the subscription is canceled.
        • In some countries (such as Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey, and certain EU countries for renewed subscriptions longer than 1 month), cancellations may qualify for a prorated refund. Details are in the Countries with prorated refunds for Microsoft subscriptions article linked from the cancellation pages.
    3. If the Pro upgrade is Copilot Pro
      • Copilot Pro has specific refund windows:
        • In Canada, Denmark, Faroe Islands, France, French Guiana, French Polynesia, Greenland, Guadeloupe, Israel, Korea, Martinique, Mayotte, New Caledonia, Réunion, St. Pierre & Miquelon, Turkey, Wallis & Futuna: a prorated refund is available if canceled at any time.
        • In all other countries/regions: a prorated refund is available if canceled within 14 days of initial purchase.
      • Cancel the duplicate Copilot Pro subscription from the Services & subscriptions page as above; the system will apply the appropriate refund rule based on region and timing.
    4. If the Pro upgrade was purchased through a mobile app store
      • If the subscription was purchased via Google Play or Apple App Store, cancellation and refund must be requested through those stores, not Microsoft:
        • For Google Play purchases, see Learn about Google Play refund policies.
        • For Apple App Store purchases, request a refund from Apple support.
    5. If the duplicate charge is for a game/app from Microsoft Store (not a subscription)
      1. Go to the Xbox support page to Request a refund for digital games and sign in.
      2. Select the relevant item and choose Request a refund.
      3. Provide the reason (accidental duplicate purchase) and select Next, then Submit.
      4. Refund requests are typically processed within 72 hours; status can be checked on the Refund status tab.
    6. If charges are unclear or you cannot cancel online
      • If the extra charge does not clearly map to a subscription or app in your account, or online cancellation/refund is not available in your market, contact Microsoft Support:
        1. Go to the Microsoft Support site (for account/billing).
        2. Sign in, choose the relevant product (e.g., Microsoft 365/Windows/Store), and select a billing or subscription category.
        3. Use Chat with a support agent or similar option and explain that there was an accidental duplicate purchase and that a refund is needed for one of the charges.

After the duplicate subscription or purchase is canceled, the remaining Pro subscription stays active on the account; no separate installation is usually required beyond signing in with the same Microsoft account on Windows 11 and associated apps.
