Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Microsoft 365 Family does not use a product key in most cases. It activates through the Microsoft account used to purchase the subscription.

You can check if the subscription is active here after signing in: https://account.microsoft.com/services

If the purchase is there, you just need to sign in with that account in Office and it should activate automatically.

    • Make sure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account that the subscription is linked to.
    • Then, open any Office app (like Word or Excel), go to File > Account, and click "Update License" to refresh your subscription status.

    If issue still persists:

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

    Here’s how:

    • Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
    • Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your license.
    • Find your Microsoft 365 Subscription and click the "Install".
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If anything’s unclear or the "Install" option still doesn’t show, feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to walk you through it!

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

For Microsoft 365 Family there is normally no separate product key to use after purchase. Installation and activation are done by signing in with the Microsoft account that redeemed or purchased the subscription, not by entering a key.

Key points based on the scenario:

    1. For a new, never-used key (for example from a retail card), the key is redeemed once at https://www.microsoft365.com/setup. After redemption, the subscription is tied to a Microsoft account and the key is no longer needed for installs or activation.
    2. To install or activate Microsoft 365 Family on a PC, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription via the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page. The product is managed and reinstalled from there; a product key is not shown or required.
    3. If Microsoft 365 is prompting for a product key on the PC, the correct action is to sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Microsoft 365 Family subscription instead of entering a key.
    4. If the purchase was preinstalled on a new Windows PC, a digital product key is transmitted to the device when Windows is activated; no printed key is provided. Activation is again done by signing in with the associated Microsoft account.

Because sign-in with the correct Microsoft account replaces the need for a product key, the next steps are:

    1. Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and confirm which Microsoft account has the Microsoft 365 Family subscription and that it is active.
    2. On the husband’s computer, start any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.) and choose the option to sign in. Use the same Microsoft account that shows the active Microsoft 365 Family subscription.
    3. If the device is still asking specifically for a key after signing in, follow the guidance in Activate Office from the banner it shows, and ensure the correct account is used.

If a key card was purchased and has not yet been redeemed, the key would be on or under a scratch-off area on the card in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX and must first be redeemed at https://www.microsoft365.com/setup. After that, installs are done only by signing in with the associated Microsoft account.
