A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
For a Project Administrator or Coordinator in telecommunications and construction, advanced Excel skills are highly valuable, especially for scheduling, cost tracking, reporting, and dashboards. Pursuing a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Expert certification is a strong choice.
For Excel specifically, there are two main Expert options in the current Microsoft ecosystem, depending on the Office version in use:
- Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps)
- Validates advanced skills in creating, managing, and distributing professional spreadsheets and workbooks.
- Focus areas include managing workbook options and settings, managing and formatting data, creating advanced formulas and macros, and managing advanced charts and tables.
- The related exam is MO-211: Microsoft Excel Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps).
- Recommended for environments using Microsoft 365, which is common in modern organizations.
- Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert (Office 2016 or 2019)
- If the organization is still on Office 2016 or 2019, the corresponding Expert certifications (for example, Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert (Office 2016) or Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert (Office 2019)) validate similar advanced Excel capabilities for those versions.
Given 9 years of experience and a project-focused role, the Microsoft 365 Apps path is generally the most future-proof and aligned with current platforms:
- Target MO-211: Microsoft Excel Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps) as the primary Excel credential.
- If broader Office expertise is desired (for example, Word and PowerPoint for project documentation and presentations), consider working toward the Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps) certification, which requires:
- Earning a Microsoft Office Specialist: Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) certification by passing three Associate-level exams (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) in different programs, and
- Passing two Expert-level exams in different programs (for example, Word Expert and Excel Expert) with at least one based on Microsoft 365 Apps.
This combination would demonstrate not only advanced Excel capability but also strong overall Office productivity skills, which is highly relevant for project coordination roles.
