Windows Media Player shows this type of message when the file’s format or encoding isn’t supported or when a required codec is missing or corrupted.
To troubleshoot on Windows 10:
- Confirm the file format is supported
Check the file extension (for example, .mp3, .mp4, .avi):- Right‑click the audio file > Properties > General tab.
- Compare the extension with the formats listed as supported in Windows Media Player (for example .asf, .asx, .avi, .wav, .wax, .wma, .wm, .wmv, .m3u, .mpg, .mpeg, .mp3, etc.).
If the format is not supported, the file must be converted to a supported format or played in another player.
- Check codec details for the file
If the extension is supported but playback still fails, the encoding/codec used inside the file may be unsupported:- Right‑click the file > Properties > Details tab to see format/codec information if available.
- If the codec is missing or outdated, install an appropriate codec pack as described below.
- Install or update codecs (for unsupported encoding settings)
Unsupported encoding settings usually mean the correct codec is not installed:
- Install a trusted codec pack that includes the needed audio/video codecs (for example, K‑Lite Codec Pack or CCCP) as suggested in the Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance.
- After installation, restart Windows Media Player and try playing the file again.
- Clear the Windows Media Player database (if some files play and others don’t)
Corrupted library data can cause playback errors:
- Close Windows Media Player.
- Press Windows + R, type:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player\and press Enter. - Delete all files in that folder (do not delete the folder itself).
- Reopen Windows Media Player and test playback.
- Update audio and graphics drivers
Outdated drivers can cause playback issues:- Open Device Manager and update the audio device driver and display adapter driver, or download the latest versions from the PC or device manufacturer’s site.
- Run the Windows Media Player troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Media Player troubleshooter and apply any fixes it suggests.
If the file uses a format or codec that Windows Media Player does not support at all, the only resolution is to convert the file to a supported format (such as .mp3 or .wma for audio) or use a different media player that supports that encoding.
