I have changed my mobile device and I don't have access anymore to my MSF Authenticator.

I am the only admin on the account, I am unable to use other way of accessing my account. i need support to reset my MSF Authenticator.

Thank you,

Dragos

    Dear @Dragos Stavarache,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

I’m sorry to hear about the situation you’re facing. Based on your description, I understand that you recently changed your mobile device and no longer have access to Microsoft Authenticator, and this is affecting your only administrator account, preventing you from signing in and managing your Microsoft 365 tenant.

In scenarios like this, when there is no alternative MFA method available and no other administrator in the organization, the account cannot be reset through self‑service options or from within the Admin Center. I also understand that you have already tried contacting Microsoft Support by phone, but the call was interrupted by an automated system without reaching a support agent.

Please note that this is a common experience at the beginning of the call. In many regions, Microsoft uses an automated IVR system first. If you stay on the line and follow the prompts, the call will eventually be routed to a live support agent who can raise a service request for you. Once you reach a support agent, they will escalate the case to the Microsoft Data Protection team, who are the only team authorized to verify tenant ownership and assist with restoring administrative access in this type of security‑sensitive scenario.

I kindly recommend trying to call the official Microsoft support number one more time and follow the IVR flow carefully. Please try to find the related hotline number to call the frontline: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

First, when you call the hotline, they will ask you what kind of problem you are struggling with.

    Answer: Authenticator.

A: What products do you use?

    B: Office 365 for business.

    Verification: Education or company account?

    B: For companies

    A: Are you an administrator?

    B: Yes.

A: Are there any other administrators in your organization?

    B: No.

A: I need one.... Service request?

    B: Yes

If your organization's Office 365 Business subscription is from a partner or reseller, contact the reseller's support provider to help open a service request on behalf of you instead.

If you still cannot reach to agent, there is still a workaround, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription via this link Compare All Microsoft 365 Plans | Microsoft. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the provided prompts. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your previous tenant.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription once your issue is resolved to avoid any unintended charges.

I understand that this entire process can feel long and complicated, and I truly appreciate your patience while working through it. These steps are in place to protect the security of your account, so I hope you can understand why they are required. I sincerely hope you’ll be able to regain access to your account soon. If you need help at any point, or if you have any questions during the process, please feel free to reach out, I’m always here and happy to assist.

Thank you again for your understanding and patience.

    Warm regards,

Because the account is a Microsoft 365 business tenant and there is only one admin who is locked out by Microsoft Authenticator, the reset must be done by Microsoft’s Data Protection team. Forum moderators or documentation cannot directly reset MFA or bypass verification.

To regain access as the sole admin, use one of these supported paths:

    1. Call Microsoft support and ask for the Data Protection team
      • Use the regional number listed under Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.
      • When the IVR/agent asks questions, clearly state:
        • The problem is with Authenticator / MFA.
        • The product is Office 365 for business / Microsoft 365 for business.
        • The account type is company (work) account, not personal.
        • Confirm being the only administrator and that no other admin can reset MFA.
      • Ask explicitly to open a service request with the Microsoft Data Protection team to reset the admin’s MFA methods.
      • Be prepared to provide tenant details and identity verification (admin UPN, tenant domain, business details, etc.).
    2. If calls keep failing, create a temporary trial tenant to open a ticket
      • Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 trial tenant (separate from the locked tenant).
      • In the new tenant, go to the Microsoft 365 admin center → Support → Help & support.
      • Open a support ticket stating:
        • This new tenant is only for contacting support.
        • The real problem is a different existing tenant where the only global admin is locked out by MFA.
        • Provide the locked tenant’s domain, admin sign-in name, and describe the Authenticator lockout.
      • Ask support to route the case to the Data Protection team to verify identity and reset MFA on the original tenant.

Once the Data Protection team verifies identity, they can clear or re-register MFA for the global admin so sign-in can proceed and new authentication methods (such as a new Authenticator registration and additional backup methods) can be configured.
