Switching out of S mode is handled entirely through the Microsoft Store and the Microsoft account. The error indicates an issue with the Microsoft account being used, not with the S mode process itself.
To switch out of S mode, use one of these supported flows and ensure the same Microsoft account is correctly signed in and working:
- Confirm the Microsoft account is healthy
- Open a browser and go to
account.live.com as prompted.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used in the Microsoft Store.
- If prompted for security info, verification, or to accept updated terms, complete those steps.
- After the account opens normally with no alerts, sign out and back in to the Microsoft Store app.
- Start the switch from Windows Settings (recommended) For Windows 11 in S mode:
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Under Switch to Windows 11 Pro, select Go to the Store (do not use the Upgrade your edition of Windows link).
- In the Store page that opens (Switch out of S mode or similar), select Get and confirm.
For Windows 10 in S mode:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Under Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro, select Go to the Store (not the Upgrade your edition of Windows link).
- In the Store page (Switch out of S mode or similar), select Get and confirm.
- Use the direct Store link (if Settings path fails)
- Use the built-in link to open the correct Store page: Switch out of S Mode.
- Select Get and wait for the confirmation message.
Important notes:
- Switching out of S mode is permanent; it is not possible to switch back to S mode afterward.
- There is no charge for switching out of S mode.
- If the device belongs to an organization, the administrator may have enforced S mode and blocked switching; in that case, contact the organization’s admin.
If the Microsoft account continues to show problems even after signing in at account.live.com, resolve any security or sign-in issues shown there first, then repeat the switch steps from Settings.
