Hi, I noticed that my battery was draining extremely fast, and when checking what apps caused it, it shows that it was caused by System and File Explorer. Any clue on how to fix this, or at least minimize its effects? Thanks!

Hello, thank you for your reply.

computer is in Connected Standby mode, but the system or drivers are still running in the background.

Open Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Advanced power settings.

Find Network connectivity in Standby and change it to: Disable.

This will prevent network connectivity from consuming power in standby mode.

    Hello,

Windows has a built-in battery analysis tool. Open CMD (as administrator), and type: powercfg /batteryreport

Then open the generated file: C:\Users\Your Username\battery-report.html

You can see battery health, which applications are consuming the most power, and the discharge rate.

System and File Explorer are core Windows components, so they will always show some battery usage, but there are several ways to identify and reduce excessive drain.

    1. Identify what’s really using the battery
      • Open detailed battery usage:
        • Select Start > Settings > System > Power & battery (or System > Battery on some builds).
        • Expand Battery usage.
        • For Time period, choose Last 24 hours (or 6 hours / 24 hours / 1 week depending on which shows higher usage).
        • For Show, select Apps with usage.
      • Check which apps have high usage around the times when “System” and “File Explorer” spike. Often, background apps, indexing, sync tools, or heavy file operations are the real cause.
    2. Close or disable high-usage apps
      • In Battery usage, look for apps using a lot of power. If not actively needed, close them.
      • If some of these apps start automatically:
        • Open Task Manager.
        • Go to the Startup (or Startup apps) tab.
        • Right-click apps you don’t need at startup and select Disable.
        • This reduces background activity that drives up “System” and “File Explorer” usage.
    3. Adjust power mode for better battery life
      • Disconnect the power supply.
      • Select the Battery icon on the right side of the taskbar.
      • Choose Recommended or move the slider down to Battery saver when you want to maximize battery life (e.g., web browsing, watching videos).
      • Lower power modes reduce CPU and background activity, which directly lowers “System” drain.
    4. Keep Windows and drivers updated
      • Outdated drivers or system components can cause high background CPU usage under “System”.
      • Use Windows Update (and, on Surface devices, the Surface app → Help & supportCheck for updates) to install all available updates.
    5. General battery and health practices
      • Avoid running many apps at once, especially those that do heavy disk or network activity (these often show up as File Explorer/System usage).
      • When using apps known to consume a lot of power (games, video calls, heavy file copies), plug in the device if possible to reduce stress on the battery.

If, after these steps, “System” is still consistently at the top with unusually high usage, use the battery usage view to narrow down time windows of heavy drain, then systematically close or uninstall apps that are active during those periods.
