Greetings;

Is there way to temporarily replenish my trial account workspace so I can migrate the warehouse to a different workspace with the proper capacity?

    Hi @Hakki, Majd

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you very much for reaching out regarding the CapacityLimitExceeded errors on a warehouse created in a trial workspace. I appreciate your patience and the details you provided. I’d like to share a quick clarification and the recommended next steps to help you move forward.

Trial capacity can’t be replenished or upgraded in‑place. When the trial ends or becomes overloaded, non‑Power BI Fabric items (like warehouses, lakehouses, pipelines) become inactive until the workspace is moved to an active paid capacity. The supported path is to run or migrate your content into a workspace backed by an active Fabric capacity.

1/ Quickest way to restore access
Ask your Fabric or Power BI administrator (if that’s not you) to reassign the workspace (currently on trial capacity) to an active paid capacity (F/P). Once the workspace is running on an active capacity, the warehouse becomes accessible again.

2/ Choose the right migration approach depending on your source

    • If your source is Synapse dedicated SQL pool or SQL Server, use the Fabric Migration Assistant to move schema and data.
    • If your source is an existing Fabric Warehouse in a trial workspace, do not use the Migration Assistant.
    • Instead, use SQL Database Projects to export/publish the schema, then use Copy job or other cross‑workspace copy options to move the data into a workspace with active capacity.

3/ Check if capacity overload is still occurring
Use the Fabric Capacity Metrics app to confirm overload patterns and identify which item is causing throttling. This helps determine whether optimization or a capacity upgrade is needed.

For additional information, you can refer to these articles:

    4/ Contact Support

In case you require more in-depth guidance or support for these steps, I’d recommend posting your query in the Microsoft Fabric Community, specifically in the Data Warehouse or Capacity forum sections. These channels are dedicated to Fabric‑related scenarios, and you’ll find the most qualified group of respondents there. Other partners and community experts who regularly follow those threads can also share their insights or learn from your experience. The Q&A forum here has limited scope for deep Fabric capacity or migration topics, so posting in the Fabric Community will give you faster and more accurate guidance from specialists who work with these issues every day.

A trial workspace can’t be “replenished” or upgraded in-place to avoid CapacityLimitExceeded errors. To proceed, the warehouse must be moved into a workspace that’s backed by an active Fabric capacity (paid or trial) and that has enough available capacity.

Use this approach instead of trying to extend the trial workspace:

    1. Ensure there is a workspace with active Fabric capacity:
      • Confirm the target workspace is assigned to an active Fabric capacity and not paused or throttled.
      • In the workspace, verify under Workspace settings > License info that it shows Fabric capacity backing.
    2. Migrate or recreate the warehouse in the capacity-backed workspace:
      • For Data Warehouse migrations, use the Fabric Migration Assistant, which requires:
        • A workspace with an active or trial Fabric capacity.
        • A DACPAC from the source (for example, Synapse dedicated SQL pool) if using that path.
      • The Migration Assistant will create a new warehouse in the destination workspace.
    3. If CapacityLimitExceeded still occurs on the destination capacity:
      • Use the Microsoft Fabric Capacity Metrics app to confirm the capacity is overloaded and identify which workspace/item is causing the overload.
      • If the warehouse or other items are consuming more than the available capacity (for example, operations using well over 100% of base capacity), either optimize workloads, reschedule heavy jobs, or increase capacity.

If the trial workspace itself is out of capacity and cannot run operations, the only supported path is to move content into a workspace with sufficient, active capacity rather than extending the trial.
