How to reload software with a Product Key
I have Office Home and Student 2010 disc. It was loaded on my hard drive years ago using the Product Key.
Months ago my hard drive was having problems. So I had it replaced by the Best Buy Geeks squad. They transferred the data and programs to a new hard drive. But I noticed the Microsoft Office program didn't transfer. So using the disc I reloaded it.
It worked fine for a while. Then stopped working. In trying to figure out what was wrong I noticed the instructions say to enter the Product Key within 30 days. I didn't see that when I did the reload. So I tried to reload again using the Product Key but no luck.
Initially there were 2 options for activation...typing the Product Key in or by phone. The phone option is no longer available this many years later.
How can I get this Office software to load and work?

- Reinstall from the original disc
- Insert the Office 2010 disc.
- If setup does not start, open the disc in File Explorer and run
SETUP.EXE. - When prompted, enter the 25‑character Office 2010 product key from the original packaging (not a Windows key, and not a key from another Office version).
- Complete setup and then start one of the Office apps (for example, Word) to trigger activation.
- Activate Office 2010
- Open an Office 2010 program (for example, Word).
- Go to File > Help > Activate Product Key.
- Follow the Activation Wizard steps to activate online.
- If Activate Product Key does not appear, Office is already activated.
- If the product key does not work
Common causes for Office 2010 product key failures include:
- Typing mistakes (for example, confusing B/8, G/6, O/0, Q/0, or VV/W).
- Using a key from a different Microsoft product (Windows, another Office version, or a single Office program) instead of the Office Home and Student 2010 key.
- If there is valid proof of purchase and the key is lost or damaged, Microsoft Support may be able to replace the key or provide options. See the “Contact support about your product key” section in the same article.
- If the key was purchased separately and is now blocked, it may have been stolen or fraudulently obtained; the recommendation is to contact the seller for a refund as described in Where to enter your Office product key.
- If activation still cannot be completed
- Use the contact options at the bottom of the product key articles to reach Microsoft support and provide the product key and proof of purchase for further review.
If none of these steps succeed, Office 2010 cannot be activated on that installation, and the practical path forward is to move to a supported Office version such as Microsoft 365, as Office 2010 is no longer supported.
