In the current Microsoft Designer editor, text is always added and edited inside a text box object. Deleting the placeholder text by selecting the whole box (instead of just the text) removes the entire text object, which is what is being observed.
To add or change text without deleting the box:
- Click once on the text box so the text cursor appears inside it (not the resize handles around the whole box).
- Select only the placeholder text (for example, drag over the words "click here to add text").
- Type the desired text to replace the placeholder.
- Click outside the box to finish editing.
If the box keeps disappearing, it usually means the entire object is being selected and deleted. In that case, add a new text box and try clicking directly on the text area (not on the border) before typing.
Designer also supports AI-generated text suggestions:
- On the canvas, select Text.
- Type a description of what the text should say in the prompt box.
- Select Generate and choose one of the suggested text options to insert into the design.
- Once inserted, edit it as normal by clicking inside the text box and replacing the text.
