If I selected business as a way to use my Microsoft account, how can I remove that?

I think I selected business when accessing my Microsoft Account after a reboot. Mine is a home account, not a business account. Can this be set right?

Selecting “business” when prompted does not convert a personal Microsoft account into a work or school account, and it can be corrected.

There are two common situations and how to fix them:

    1. If a work/school account was added to the Windows device
    • Open Settings on Windows.
    • Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
    • Select the work or school account shown there.
    • Choose Disconnect and confirm. This removes the work/school connection from the device; the personal Microsoft account remains a home account.

If the account was only added to a specific app (for example, Outlook or Office) and you chose something like “No, this app only”, then it is not added to the device and you only need to sign out inside that app.

    1. If the personal account was invited into a business organization A personal Microsoft account can be a guest in a Microsoft 365 business/education organization without becoming a work account.
    • Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/.
    • Sign in with the personal Microsoft account.
    • Select the profile initials > View account > Manage organizations.
    • Under Other organizations, select any organization that is not needed and choose Leave organization. This removes the business association; the account remains a personal Microsoft account.

If a work or school account exists separately (created by an organization) and shares the same email address as a personal account, the sign-in page may ask “Which account do you want to use?” In that case, the accounts are still distinct:

    • The Personal account is the home Microsoft account.
    • The Work or school account belongs to an organization and is managed by its administrator. If that organizational account was created in error, contact the organization’s IT/admin and ask them to remove or correct that work/school account.

None of these steps change a personal Microsoft account into a business one or vice versa; they only remove device or organization associations so the account is used purely as a home account again.
