A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Several things can cause this behavior with Microsoft Authenticator and business (work/school) accounts. Try these checks and fixes in order:
- Confirm notifications are working on the phone
- Make sure the phone is not in Do Not Disturb/Quiet mode.
- Check the phone’s notification settings and ensure Microsoft Authenticator is allowed to send notifications (sound/vibrate enabled).
- Verify that other apps can receive notifications. If none can, there may be a phone or network issue.
- If notifications only fail for this account, remove that account from Authenticator and add it again, allowing notifications when prompted.
- Check for the “authentication did not complete” conditions
If the sign-in shows “authentication did not complete” or just doesn’t move forward:
- Ensure the Authenticator app is unlocked when trying to approve.
- Make sure the app is updated to the latest version.
- Confirm the phone has a working internet connection; if needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Verify the device date and time are set automatically and correctly, then restart the phone.
- If no push arrives, use another verification method
- On the sign-in screen, choose “I don’t have a code” or similar and try SMS, email, or another method if configured.
- If SMS or email codes also do not arrive, avoid making too many repeated requests, as this can cause a temporary block on sending codes.
- If still blocked from signing in
- For a business/work account, contact the organization’s IT administrator/Help desk and ask them to:
- Open Microsoft Entra admin center → Users → your account → Authentication methods.
- Use “Require re-register multifactor authentication” to reset MFA so it can be set up again on the phone.
- If the account is the only admin account in the tenant and no other admin can reset MFA, the tenant owner must contact Microsoft via the Customer service phone numbers and request the Data Protection team to reset MFA for the admin account.
- For a business/work account, contact the organization’s IT administrator/Help desk and ask them to:
These steps address the most common causes: missing notifications, app/device configuration issues, and MFA configuration problems on the tenant side.
