Hello,

I am experiencing a problem with very low FPS when playing Minecraft Java Edition on my PC. When I open the game, the FPS drops a lot and the game becomes laggy and difficult to play. This issue happens even when my computer is not running many other programs.

I have tried changing some video settings and checking my graphics settings, but the problem still happens. My whole screen sometimes looks dim or different when Minecraft is open, which makes me think it might be related to graphics settings.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions on how to fix this issue so the game can run smoothly again.

Thank you for your time.

If you have dual graphics on your PC, open the Settings App.

Go to System - Display - Graphics.

In the list on that settings window, is Minecraft set to run on the dedicated graphics card, not integrated graphics.

If that was not the problem, do you play other games and if so, does this problem no occur in other games.

Low FPS in Minecraft Java Edition on Windows is often related to graphics configuration, drivers, or power/performance settings. Use the following checks and adjustments:

    1. Check Windows power and performance settings
    • Set Windows to favor performance so the CPU and GPU are not throttled:
      • Select Start and type Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open it, and on Visual Effects select Adjust for best performance.
      • Then go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery (or Power & sleep depending on version).
      • Set Power mode (or choose a power plan) to Best performance / High performance.
      • Note: This increases power usage and heat, especially on laptops.
    1. Verify GPU acceleration and DirectX features Low FPS and a dim/changed screen can occur if hardware acceleration or Direct3D/DirectDraw are disabled or not working correctly.
    • Ensure hardware acceleration is fully enabled (on older Windows versions):
      • Open Display Properties > Settings > Advanced.
      • On the Performance or Troubleshooting tab, move Hardware Acceleration to Full.
    • Check DirectX features:
      • Run dxdiag (press Start, type dxdiag, press Enter).
      • On the Display tab, confirm DirectDraw Acceleration and Direct3D Acceleration are Enabled.
      • If they show Disabled, click Enable for each.
      • If multiple GPUs are present, repeat on each Display tab.

If Direct3D/DirectDraw are unavailable or disabled, many games (including Minecraft) will perform very poorly or fail to use the GPU properly.

    1. Update graphics drivers If DirectX features are enabled but performance is still poor, update the GPU driver from the GPU vendor (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel) using their official software or support page. Out-of-date or damaged drivers are a common cause of low FPS and odd color/dimming behavior.
    2. Check for hybrid graphics and VSync issues On systems with both integrated and dedicated GPUs (hybrid graphics), running games in windowed mode with VSync can cause visual issues like tearing or corruption, and may affect perceived performance.
    • In Minecraft video settings, try:
      • Switching between Fullscreen and Windowed to see which performs better.
      • Turning VSync off in the game options and testing again.
    1. Use Minecraft’s FPS limiter appropriately Minecraft Java has FPS limiter options that can affect performance:
    • There is a global FPS cap and a newer “Reduce FPS when” setting.
    • If Reduce FPS when is set to AFK or Minimized, the game intentionally lowers FPS when idle or minimized (for example, 30 FPS after 1 minute of no input, then 10 FPS after 10 minutes, and 10 FPS when minimized).
    • Ensure the global FPS cap is set high enough or to Unlimited if maximum performance is desired, and verify that the low FPS is not simply the AFK limiter kicking in when there is no input.
    1. General Windows performance hygiene
    • Close unused apps and browser tabs before launching Minecraft.
    • Use Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to check if other processes are consuming high CPU, GPU, or disk while playing.
    • Restart the PC if it has been running for a long time with many apps opened and closed.

If after these steps FPS is still low, focus on:

    • Ensuring the correct GPU is being used (on hybrid systems, configure the system so Minecraft uses the high-performance GPU).
    • Reinstalling or repairing the graphics driver if DirectX features or acceleration remain problematic.
