In Outlook 2021 (perpetual, classic), the Word editor is already built in and cannot be separately “switched on” or configured like in much older versions (Outlook 2003 and earlier). There is no separate setting in Outlook 2021 to “set Word as the editor”; Outlook always uses its integrated editor based on Word technology.
If Outlook 2021 is not behaving as expected when composing messages (for example, missing formatting options or HTML behavior), the supported approaches are:
- Repair Office/Outlook
- Close all Office apps.
- Open the Windows Control Panel > Programs (or Apps & Features, depending on Windows version).
- Select Microsoft Office (Office 2021) and choose Change.
- Run Repair (or Online Repair if offered) to rebuild Outlook/Word components.
- Reinstall Office 2021
- If repair does not restore expected editor behavior, uninstall Office 2021 completely from Control Panel.
- Then reinstall Office 2021 from the account or installation source used originally.
- This resets Outlook and Word (including the editor integration) to default.
There is no additional step required or available in Outlook 2021 to “convert” the editor to Word 2021 beyond repairing or reinstalling Office so that the integrated editor functions correctly.
