Uncontrolled mouse scrolling.

I have Windows 11 installed on my PC. When I'm using the mouse the cursor will sometimes jump to the start of the paragraph while I'm half way through typing something (in Chrome and Word). Also the screen will jump up and down while I'm trying to scroll down and I won't be able to scroll down. I have tried re-installing my mouse drivers but this hasn't helped. I have also run Bitedefender virus scan to check if it is Malware which comes back negative.

    Hi,

    What is the mouse model?

Have you tried testing it with another PC to see if the same problem occurs?

    Thanks

The behavior described is consistent with a mouse or keyboard input issue rather than malware. Use the following steps to isolate and correct it.

    1. Check the mouse hardware
    • If the mouse is USB, unplug it, wait a few seconds so Windows unloads the driver, then plug it back in.
    • Try a different USB port.
    • If using a USB hub, connect the mouse directly to the PC instead of through the hub.
    • If the mouse is wireless, replace or recharge the batteries and make sure there is no dirt blocking the sensor.
    • If possible, test the mouse on another PC. If the same jumping/scrolling occurs there, the mouse is likely faulty and may need replacement.
    1. Check wireless/Bluetooth connection (if applicable)
    • For a wireless USB receiver, unplug the receiver for about 10 seconds and plug it back in to re-establish the connection.
    • If the mouse uses Bluetooth, follow the guidance in Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows to ensure the Bluetooth connection is stable.
    1. Update mouse and related drivers
    • Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates to ensure Windows 11 and device drivers are current.
    • Alternatively, open Device Manager, locate the mouse under Mice and other pointing devices, open its Driver tab, and select Update Driver, then follow the prompts.
    1. Adjust mouse settings to control scrolling behavior
    • Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
    • Adjust:
      • Scroll wheel settings (number of lines scrolled at a time).
      • Whether to scroll inactive windows when hovering.
      • Scrolling direction.
    • If using a Microsoft mouse, install and configure the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center to further customize scrolling and button behavior. See Mouse and Keyboard Center download.
    1. Verify keyboard behavior
    • If the cursor jumps while typing, ensure no stuck keys (such as Home, Page Up, or arrow keys) and that the keyboard is clean.
    • If using a Microsoft keyboard, special keys require current Windows updates; check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (on Windows 10) or the equivalent Windows 11 update page and install all updates.

If, after these steps, the mouse works normally on another PC but not on this one, focus on driver updates and mouse settings on the affected PC. If it fails on multiple PCs, replace the mouse.
