Hi joanne derosa,
I’m sorry to hear about your laptop. Losing a device is stressful, and I understand why you want to know if it can be located. So here's something I need to clarify:
- Microsoft itself cannot track or remotely access a lost device.
- You need to turn on “Find my device” feature before the Dell laptop was lost.
- The device needs to be in condition to be tracked (powered on and connected to the Internet).
So once it’s turned off, reset or signed out, the laptop cannot be tracked. If Find my device feature was enabled previously, let's go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in. Select your Dell laptop from the device list > click Find my device:
- Last known location shows when the device was last online
- Location unavailable: device is off, offline, or location was disabled
- The device doesn’t appear: it was never linked to your Microsoft account.
Note that location is not real‑time, and as I mentioned above, only updates when the laptop is powered on and connected to the internet. In short, tracking a lost device is possible only if you turned on the specific tracking feature prior.
