Why is Excel Teams Protection Limited?

Teams is the best way to have a team have access to a document that they all need to edit. But there is no way to have ranges locked unless it opens on desktop, and then there's no way to have the document set for everyone to automatically open in desktop. This is all counterintuitive and frustrating. It also is frustrating that posts cannot be scheduled to post greater than a week out, why? Microsoft make your applications usable.

    Hi @Johnson, Danielle (RTM),

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I'm sincerely sorry for any inconvenience and troubles this situation may have caused you. Please let me help you addressing the problems one by one:

1/ Ranges locked only available in Excel desktop

When you open an Excel file inside Teams, you're typically using Excel web version embedded in Teams and Excel web does have feature difference compared with the desktop app. However, if you need to have "ranges locked" in the worksheet, Excel web version does provide the same feature as Excel desktop app either you refer "ranges locked" as protected ranges or freeze ranges:

    • Protected ranges: in Review tab > Manage Protection > Add unlocked ranges (same as Allow Edit Ranges in Excel desktop app)

    • Freeze ranges: select the ranges you want to freeze > view > freeze panes

2/ Automatically open files in desktop app

    • It's correct that there is no Teams admin policy to set this option globally for all users. Although there is an option in SharePoint to open Office documents in the client apps by default, this doesn't reliably control the Teams embedded file open action. Teams can still open in its own viewer unless the user changes Teams open preference.
    • Teams does provide a preference option to open Office files in Desktop app via Settings > Files and link > "Always open Word/Excel/PowerPoint in" > Desktop app. However, this option is a user preference, not an admin-enforced policy.
    • For reference: Make office files open in the desktop app by default — Laura Anderton

3/ Teams posts cannot be scheduled more than a week

According to your description, I have tested in my testing environment and also experienced the same behavior. The schedule message/post only allows user to choose date within one week starting from today date.

Meanwhile, I have researched through Microsoft product help and other official information sources but up to now, there is no Microsoft help article or announcement found about the date range limitation or any changes on Teams application regarding this issue. I greatly understand how important this functionality is for your workflow. With wider time ranges, it will help improving management in business plan and also reduce the possibility of missing important deadlines.

While these options are not available today, I'm optimistic about future enhancements. I strongly recommend you share your feedback directly with the Microsoft engineering team via Microsoft 365 Feedback Hub → Send Feedback and describe your suggestion in detail.
