What is the send / receive error message? That will give us an idea if it is an authentication error or something else.

    What is your build number?

If error 0x800CCC0E - this is an authentication error. If using POP, you need a new app password.

For error 0x80070057 - several people are reporting this error recently. Try deleting the Gmail entry from credential manager.

Start typeing credential manager on the start menu. When it comes up, open it. Look for an entry on the windows tab and remove it. It will be listed as

    MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2:[code]_tp_google_imap_OAuth2

Expand each MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2*_tp_g.... entry and click Remove.User's image

Follow these steps in order, testing send/receive after each step:

    1. Confirm internet connectivity
      • Open a browser (Edge or Chrome).
      • Browse to http://www.microsoft.com or http://www.bing.com.
      • If these do not load, fix the network issue first using the Windows network troubleshooter.
    2. Check for Gmail-specific sign-in/permission issues in classic Outlook
      • If Outlook shows errors like:
        • “We couldn’t log on to the incoming (POP/IMAP) server…”
        • “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP. You may need to make changes to your Gmail settings.”
      • Make sure Outlook is updated to a build that includes the Gmail fixes (Current Channel Version 2404 or later, and for some scenarios 2412+ as documented).
      • If an error window offers a Retry link for the Gmail account, select Retry and, in the browser sign-in window, ensure the checkbox is selected for:
        • “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.”
      • Complete the Google sign-in and consent, then try Send/Receive again.
    3. If Gmail won’t sync or add correctly in classic Outlook
      • In some cases, Gmail sign-in can fail with messages like “The browser or app may not be secure” or the IMAP setup error.
      • Update Office to a version that includes the Gmail sign-in fix (for classic Outlook) as described in the Gmail sign-in article, then re-add the Gmail account.
      • If IMAP is disabled in your Gmail account, enable it following Google’s guidance in Add Gmail to another email client and then retry account setup.
    4. Recreate the Gmail account in classic Outlook
      • Close Outlook.
      • Open Control PanelMailEmail Accounts….
      • Select the Gmail account and remove it (this does not delete mail stored on Gmail’s servers, but any local-only data in that account’s folders will be lost).
      • Select New and add the Gmail account again using automatic setup.
      • Complete the Google browser sign-in and ensure the Gmail permissions checkbox is selected.
    5. If classic Outlook never prompts for the Gmail password
      • In the account’s IMAP settings, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
      • If that fails, in Control Panel → Mail → Email Accounts…, choose New, enter name, Gmail address, and password, and let automatic setup complete.

If, after these steps, send/receive still fails only for Gmail while other accounts work, the most common causes are:

    • Missing/incorrect Google consent for Outlook (fix via the Retry sign-in and permission checkbox).
    • IMAP disabled or restricted on the Gmail side (fix via Gmail settings as per Google’s article).
