Ive been using word for years but the copilot has forced me to use other options now. I cant get rid of it no matter what I try. I see others are having the same issues. For solutions you expect me to try to follow complex instructions. Do your realize that making it this difficult to eliminate something that is extremely annoying is narcisstic psychopathetic behavior? Rather than attempt to get users to try to jump through hoops to fix this do it yourselves. Do you not have any integrity whatsover? Make it an option that is easy to turn on or off and not forced onto us or just get rid of it completely.

In Word, you should be able to turn off Copilot via File > Options > Copilot. (That option may not exist in all Office apps, though.) This applies to consumer (home use) versions of Microsoft 365 subscriptions, such as Microsoft 365 Family.

Note that if you are running an organization (business) subscription, access to Copilot is likely controlled via the settings in the Admin center.

To hide or disable Copilot in Word on Windows (Microsoft 365 for home), use the built‑in Copilot setting or, if needed, privacy settings. Both are one‑time changes.

    1. In Word, select File > Options.
    2. Select Copilot in the left pane.
    3. Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
    4. Select OK, then close and restart Word.

This turns Copilot off in Word without changing privacy settings. The Copilot button on the ribbon will be disabled and Copilot features will not be available in that app.

If the Copilot page or Enable Copilot checkbox is not available yet in Word on the device, Copilot can be turned off via privacy settings (note this also disables other cloud‑powered features like suggested replies, text predictions, Designer, and automatic alt text):

    1. In Word, go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
    2. Under Connected experiences, clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
    3. Select OK, then close and restart Word.

The privacy change only needs to be done once in any one Microsoft 365 app; it will apply to the others when they are next opened.

If Copilot is already disabled but an in‑document Copilot logo or popup still appears and gets in the way, install the latest Word updates. The intrusive in‑document Copilot logo was removed starting with Word version 16.103.1 on the Current Channel (Preview) and is being released more broadly. Updating Office to at least that build (or newer) removes that logo from the document window.
