In Windows 10 Home, the “Back up your PC” message is about the Windows Backup feature that uses a Microsoft account and OneDrive to protect data and make moving to a new PC easier.
When Windows Backup is turned on, it can do the following:
- Back up important folders to OneDrive
- Desktop
- Documents
- Pictures
- Videos
- Music
- Are protected if something happens to the PC.
- Are available on any other PC that uses the same Microsoft account and OneDrive.
- Back up settings and preferences
Windows Backup can also store:
- Installed apps
- Accessibility settings
- Accounts, Wi‑Fi networks, and passwords
- Personalization (wallpaper, colors, theme, Start layout, etc.)
- Language preferences and dictionary
- Other Windows settings
If “Not now” was selected, Windows simply will not start that cloud backup yet. The PC continues to work normally; it just will not have those files and settings backed up to the Microsoft account/OneDrive until backup is turned on later.
Windows Backup in Windows 10/11 is mainly focused on personal (consumer) devices using a personal Microsoft account (such as *@outlook.com or *@live.com). Work or school accounts are not supported for this feature.
