I am getting a message that my October 31, 2025 through October 31, 2026 has ended and needs to be renewed, even though it still has over seven more moths to run. How do I get that problem corrected?

Hello, I'm Quinn and here to help!

May I ask if you could provide a screenshot of the issue? In the meantime, please check your subscription status online

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    2. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your subscription.
    3. Confirm that the Microsoft 365 subscription shows active until October 31, 2026.

Try refreshing your license inside the Office app

    1. Open Word, or any Microsoft 365 app.
    2. Go to File > Account.
    3. Select Sign out under your account.
    4. Close the app completely.
    5. Reopen the app and sign back in with the same Microsoft account.
    6. If issue persists, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

If issue still persists, try reinstalling Office

    1. Go to https://support.microsoft.com/office/uninstall-office-for-mac-eefa1199-5b58-43af-8a3d-b73dc1a8cae3
    2. Once finished, reinstall Microsoft Office. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    3. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
    4. Find your Microsoft 365 subscription and click Install.
    5. Run the downloaded installer and follow the steps.

The message appears when Microsoft 365 thinks the subscription is expired or close to expiring, even if time remains. This is usually due to subscription status or sign-in/licensing issues, not the actual end date.

Follow these steps to correct it:

    1. Verify the subscription status
      1. Go to the Microsoft account Subscriptions/Services page and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the subscription.
      2. Confirm that the Microsoft 365 subscription shows as active and that the expiration date is October 31, 2026 (or the correct date).
      3. If the date or status is wrong, or the subscription shows as expired, resolve it there or contact Microsoft Support from that page.
    2. If the subscription is active but you still see “renew”/“expired” messages
      1. Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.) on the Mac.
      2. Reopen one Office app.
      3. Go to File > Account (or Word > About/Account on Mac, depending on version).
      4. Make sure the signed-in account matches the Microsoft account that has the active subscription.
      5. Use the option to update or refresh the license (for example, sign out and sign back in, or select an “Update license”/“Reactivate” option if shown).
      6. Restart the app and confirm the banner is gone.
    3. If the subscription was renewed recently
      • The “Renew your subscription” or “Subscription expired” banner can continue to appear for a short time after renewal.
      • Closing all Office apps and reopening them, then signing in again with the correct Microsoft account, usually clears the message.
    4. If the problem persists
      • Check whether the subscription was renewed using a product key from a store. If so, ensure the key has been redeemed at the setup site so the renewal is actually applied to the account.
      • If the online account page shows the correct active subscription and expiration date but the apps still show “expired” or “renew,” contact Microsoft Support for Microsoft 365 Family or Personal. They can correct account/license sync issues.

While resolving this, Office apps may eventually go into reduced functionality mode if they believe the subscription is expired. If that happens and immediate editing is needed, use the free Office for the web apps at Office.com or microsoft365.com until the license issue is fixed.
