    Hi Jack Wycherley,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that you would like to change the password on your Windows 10 laptop and are unsure how to do it.

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.

Before moving forward, I’d like to quickly narrow this down:

1, On the sign-in screen, do you see an email address or just a username (no email shown)?

2, Are you currently able to sign in to Windows using a PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition?

In the meantime, you can try this step:

If you can sign in to Windows using a PIN or Windows Hello, please open Settings > Accounts > Your info and check whether it shows “Microsoft account” or “Local account” under your name.

    • If it shows “Microsoft account”: Please open a web browser on this device or another device and go to the following link to change your password: https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx
    • If it shows “Local account” and you are signed in: Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, temporarily turn off Fast sign-in options (if available), restart the device, and then try changing the password again from Sign-in options.

After signing in successfully, re-enable Windows Hello options if you previously used PIN or biometrics and confirm the new password works after a restart.

Follow these steps depending on how you sign in to the laptop.

If signing in with a Microsoft account (email address on sign-in screen)

    When already signed in:

    1. Open the Settings app.
    2. Select Accounts > Sign-in options (or use this shortcut: Sign-in options).
    3. Under Password, select Change.
    4. Enter the current password, then enter and confirm the new password.
    5. If the current password is forgotten, select Forgot my current password and follow the verification steps to create a new one.

If not signed in (forgot password):

    1. On the Windows sign-in screen, select I forgot my password.
      • Or select Sign-in options > Web sign-in, sign in, then choose Forgot my password.
    2. Follow the prompts to verify identity and reset the password.
    3. You can also go to Reset password from any browser and follow the steps.

If signing in with a local account (no email shown on sign-in screen)

    When already signed in:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Accounts > Sign-in options (or Sign-in options).
    3. Under Password, select Change.
    4. Enter the old password, then the new password.
    5. If the password is forgotten, select I forgot my password, answer the security questions, and set a new password.

If not signed in (forgot password):

    1. On the sign-in screen, select the password entry button.
    2. Select OK, then Reset password.
    3. Answer the security questions set when the account was created.
    4. Enter a new password.
    5. If a password reset disk was created earlier, choose Use a password reset disk instead and follow the instructions.

If using a PIN but want to change the account password

    1. While signed in with the PIN, open Settings.
    2. Go to Accounts > Sign-in options (or Sign-in options).
    3. Under Password, select Change.
    4. Enter the current password, then set a new one.
    5. If the password is forgotten, choose the Forgot my current password option and follow the verification steps.
