Hi Jack Wycherley,
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that you would like to change the password on your Windows 10 laptop and are unsure how to do it.
Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.
Before moving forward, I’d like to quickly narrow this down:
1, On the sign-in screen, do you see an email address or just a username (no email shown)?
2, Are you currently able to sign in to Windows using a PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition?
In the meantime, you can try this step:
If you can sign in to Windows using a PIN or Windows Hello, please open Settings > Accounts > Your info and check whether it shows “Microsoft account” or “Local account” under your name.
- If it shows “Microsoft account”: Please open a web browser on this device or another device and go to the following link to change your password: https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx
- If it shows “Local account” and you are signed in: Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, temporarily turn off Fast sign-in options (if available), restart the device, and then try changing the password again from Sign-in options.
After signing in successfully, re-enable Windows Hello options if you previously used PIN or biometrics and confirm the new password works after a restart.
