Reinstalled Windows 11 & now cannot leave Windows Insider Program

I recently enrolled in the Windows Insider Program as a Dev. Few weeks later, I had to completely reinstall Windows, however, after reinstalling, I'm unable to join (or leave) the WIP. When going to Windows Update/WIP, the "Get Started" option continues after each time I try enrolling. I assumed I would need to re-enroll in order to leave the program completely. I'm writing to request help on how to completely leave WIP (without having the option to leave in WU) and reinstall Windows 11. Thanks!

    Hi Mark,

Exactly what build are you currently on?

Use WIN+R, type winver for the build #.

To completely leave the Windows Insider Program in this situation, use one of these supported paths instead of relying on the missing “Leave” option in Windows Update.

    1. Confirm the device is no longer flighting Insider builds
    • After a full reinstall, the device may already be on a production (non‑Insider) build but still showing the “Get started” button.
    • Go to Settings > System > About or run winver and check the edition, version, and build number. If it matches a publicly released build (not labeled Insider Preview), the device is effectively off Insider builds already.
    1. Opt out via Insider settings when on a production build If at any point the Insider controls do appear again (for example after an update):
    2. Ensure the device is using a production build (via About or winver as above).
    3. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
    4. Select Stop getting preview builds and follow the instructions to opt out.

This method does not remove data when done from a production build.

    1. Use a clean install to guarantee exit from Insider builds If the device is still on an Insider Preview build and there is no option to stop getting preview builds, or if the goal is to be 100% sure the machine is back on a stable public release, perform a clean install of a non‑Insider image:
    2. Back up all important data to external storage.
    3. Download a stable Windows image (for example, a Windows 11 recovery image).
    4. Boot from the installation media and perform a clean install, deleting existing Windows partitions if needed.

After this clean install, the device will be on a stable, non‑Insider build and no longer enrolled at the OS level. If desired, do not re‑register or re‑link any account under Windows Insider Program in Settings, which keeps the device out of WIP going forward.

If updates or Insider builds stop arriving and Windows Insider Program only shows Get started, that already indicates the device is not actively flighting Insider builds; the remaining step is just to ensure a stable public build is installed (via About/winver or clean install as above).
