To stop using Microsoft Authenticator push notifications so everything can be reset, there are two parts:
- Remove/unregister Authenticator as a sign-in method from the account’s security settings.
- Remove the account (or all accounts) from the Authenticator app on the iOS device.
Follow these steps.
- Remove Authenticator as a verification method in account security
For a personal Microsoft account (OneDrive/Outlook.com, etc.):
- Sign in to the Advanced security options page of the Microsoft account.
- In the list of verification options (security info), find the entry that corresponds to Microsoft Authenticator or App.
- Expand that option and select Remove.
- Select Remove again to confirm.
This removes Authenticator as a sign-in verification method so the account can be reconfigured with new methods (including re-adding Authenticator later).
Important notes from the documentation:
- Old security info does not need to be removed unless there is a security risk, but if Authenticator is blocking sign-in or is on a lost/old device, removal is appropriate.
- Do not request removal of all security information unless absolutely necessary; that puts the account into a 30‑day restricted state where security settings cannot be changed.
- Remove the account from Microsoft Authenticator on iOS
If the app is still installed and accessible on the iPhone:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator.
- Tap the account that is used for OneDrive.
- Tap the Settings gear for that account.
- Tap Remove account and confirm.
- After removal, that device can no longer be used to verify sign-in for that account until it is re-added.
If all accounts should be cleared from Authenticator on iOS:
- Open the iOS Settings app.
- Go to General > Storage.
- Select Authenticator from the app list.
- Tap Offload App.
- This removes all Authenticator data; there is no undo, and the device will no longer verify sign-ins for any account until they are re-added.
- Re‑set up sign-in after removal
Once Authenticator has been removed as a verification method and/or from the device:
- Sign back in to the Microsoft account and add new security info (for example, phone number or email) if needed.
- Then re-add the account to Microsoft Authenticator:
- Open Authenticator, choose Add account, select the appropriate account type (for example, Personal Microsoft Account), and follow the sign-in prompts.
- If push notifications are still not received after re-adding, verify:
- iOS notifications are enabled for Authenticator.
- The device is not in Do Not Disturb/Quiet mode.
- Network connectivity is available.
If notifications work for some accounts but not others, remove the problematic account from Authenticator, add it again allowing notifications, and test sign-in.
