Have you run into this known bug?
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/unable-to-add-a-gmail-account-to-classic-outlook-4d9530c5-3f40-4e6d-9b45-4477f160828f

The article title is "Unable to add a Gmail account ..." but I have seen reports that this bug can also cause working Yahoo IMAP accounts to fail. The fix is the same - Clear the Windows Credentials.

    Hi, I'm John!

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. What exact error message do you see when adding the account?
    2. Did anything change recently (password change, 2-step verification, new PC, Outlook update)?

In the meantime, if you haven’t already:

Yahoo also requires an App Password for Outlook now. Your normal Yahoo password will usually not work anymore.

    Try this:

    • Sign in to your Yahoo account security page.
    • Create an App Password for Outlook.
    • Use that generated password when adding the account in Outlook.

    Also check this:

    • Open Outlook > File > Add Account
    • Enter your Yahoo email
    • When prompted for password, use the Yahoo App Password, not your regular password.

If the issue persists, please provide more details by answering my questions.

Click "Add comment" below to let me know.

    Regards,

    John J.D.
