Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear @Hardwood Floor Specialists,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. To help you move your Microsoft 365 Business license to a new computer without your password, I have outlined the professional step-by-step process below.
Since you are using a business account, the recovery process is slightly different from a personal one, as it often depends on your organization's security settings.
Step 1: Identify the Correct Account
On your old computer (where the apps are currently working):
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Account.
- Look under User Information for the email address. Ensure this is the account you intend to move.
Step 2: Reset Your Business Password
If your IT department has enabled "Self-Service Password Reset" (SSPR), you can do this yourself:
- Go to the Microsoft Online Password Reset
- Enter your business email address.
- Follow the verification steps (this usually requires a code sent to your mobile phone or a secondary email).
Note: If you see a message saying, "You can't reset your own password," you must wait for your IT guy, as only an administrator can reset it for you in that specific setup.
Step 3: Deactivate the Old PC "Seat"
Microsoft 365 Business allows installation on up to 5 PCs/Macs. To manage your limit:
- Sign in to the My Account - Devices with your new password.
- Select Devices.
- Find the list of devices and click Sign out or deactivate next to the old computer name. This releases the license so it can be used on the new machine.
Step 4: Install on the New Computer
- On the new computer, go to portal.office.com.
- Click Install apps in the top right corner.
- Select Microsoft 365 apps to download the installer.
- Once installed, open Word and sign in with your email and new password to activate it.
For a detailed visual guide on this process, you can refer to this official documentation:
- Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac - Microsoft Support
- Sign in to Microsoft 365 - Microsoft Support
I hope this helps you get back to work quickly. If the password reset portal tells you that you don't have permission to reset your own password, please let me know and I can provide the specific number for Microsoft's Data Protection team.
