If only I could count how many times my HP envy laptop mouse freezes-all I can then do is shut it off vis the power button as absolutely NOTHING works form that point no matter what I try. (Cntrl-alt-delete is not recognized) and cannot get anything to work

    Dear Marla McPherson

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand how disruptive it feels when the pointer freezes and even Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn’t respond. At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in both the AI generated answer and the Independent Advisor’s answer on your thread. Those replies typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.  To help narrow this down, could you please share a bit more detail?

    • Which pointing device is in use when the freeze occurs: the built‑in touchpad, a wired USB mouse, a wireless mouse with a USB receiver, or a Bluetooth mouse?
    • When the freeze happens, does the Caps Lock light on the keyboard toggle (on/off) when you press it?
    • Does it happen after waking from sleep, on battery vs. plugged in, or when using an external monitor / USB‑C dock / USB hub?
    • Roughly how often does it happen and what apps are open (browser/video call/streaming/game/Teams) when it occurs?
    • If you try a wired external keyboard (just for testing), do keyboard shortcuts work when the pointer is frozen?

In the meantime, here are a few basic steps you can try:

    1. Turn off Fast Startup
    • Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > uncheck Turn on fast startup > Save.
    1. Disable USB selective suspend
    • Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings > USB selective suspend setting = Disabled.
    1. Clean Boot
    • Press Win + R, type msconfig
    • Services tab > check Hide all Microsoft services > Disable all.
    • Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable non‑essential startup items.
    • Restart and test.
    1. System integrity and disk checks
    • Open Command Prompt (run as Administrator) and run each in order: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, sfc /scannow and chkdsk C: /scan
    • Restart and check it again.
    1. Create a temporary local test account
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users > Add account > I don’t have this person’s sign-in information > Add a user without a Microsoft account, name it and set a password.
    • Sign in to check if the freeze reoccurs (you can later remove the account from the same page).

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope these focused checks help stabilize your HP Envy and prevent further freezes, so you won’t need forced shut‑downs during your work. Wishing you smooth, uninterrupted sessions on Windows 11 going forward.

Hi! Let me help you with this issue.

Does it freeze right away when you use the mouse?

Are you using the touchpad or a USB mouse?

Use a step-by-step approach to narrow whether this is a mouse/device issue or a deeper Windows freeze.

    1. Check the mouse hardware
    • If it is USB:
      • Unplug the mouse, wait 10–15 seconds, then plug it back in.
      • Try a different USB port on the laptop.
      • If using a USB hub, bypass it and plug directly into the laptop.
      • Test the mouse on another PC. If it also fails there, replace the mouse.
    • If it is wireless/Bluetooth:
      • Replace or fully charge the batteries.
      • Make sure there is no dirt blocking the sensor.
      • If it uses a USB wireless receiver, unplug the receiver for 10 seconds and plug it back in.
      • If it uses Bluetooth, re-add the mouse:
        • Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Add Device and follow the prompts to re-detect the mouse.
    1. Check for Bluetooth-specific issues (if using a Bluetooth mouse)
    • If the mouse stops responding after sleep or randomly:
      • Re-add the Bluetooth mouse as above to re-enumerate the Bluetooth receiver.
      • If multiple Bluetooth mice are connected, turn one of them off and back on.
      • If the issue repeats often, update the Bluetooth controller firmware or drivers from the laptop manufacturer.
    1. Update mouse/keyboard and other device drivers
    • Run Windows Update to get the latest drivers:
      • In the taskbar search box, type check for updates, then select Check for updates.
      • Install any offered updates, especially drivers.
    • Manually update mouse/keyboard drivers via Device Manager:
      • In the taskbar search box, type device manager and open Device Manager.
      • Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
      • Double-click the mouse device → Driver tab → Update Driver and follow the instructions.
    1. Customize or reset mouse settings
    • Open mouse settings and verify configuration:
      • Windows 11: Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
    • Optionally install Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center to customize and test a Microsoft mouse.
    1. If the whole system is freezing (not just the pointer)
    • Repeated total freezes (Ctrl+Alt+Delete not working) can indicate a broader Windows freeze rather than just a mouse problem.
    • Follow advanced freeze troubleshooting steps:
      • Identify when freezes occur (after wake, under load, random idle) and whether they happen with different mice.
      • If freezes persist with another mouse and after driver updates, collect details (frequency, what is running) and follow advanced troubleshooting guidance for Windows freezes.

If after trying another known-good mouse, updating drivers, and re-adding Bluetooth devices the laptop still hard-freezes, treat it as a system stability issue rather than a mouse issue and proceed with full system diagnostics or support.
