Use these steps to stabilize access to a Windows 11 Pro PC on a private workgroup network.
- Confirm all PCs are on the same network
- Make sure every PC connects through the same router/Wi‑Fi.
- If using Wi‑Fi, ensure all are on the same SSID and band (e.g., same 2.4/5 GHz network).
- Set the network profile to Private
- On each PC, go to Settings > Network & internet.
- For the active connection, set it to Private. A private network makes the PC discoverable and allows file and printer sharing.
- Turn on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing On the intermittently inaccessible Windows 11 Pro PC and the others:
- Select Start > Settings.
- In the search box, type manage advanced sharing settings and select Manage advanced sharing settings.
- Under Private networks, turn on:
- Network discovery
- File and printer sharing
- Under All Networks, if simple access is desired, turn off Password protected sharing (only if the network is trusted).
If you see a banner in File Explorer saying Network discovery is turned off, select it and choose Turn on network discovery and file sharing.
- Ensure required services start automatically On the Windows 11 Pro PC that sometimes disappears:
- Press Windows logo key + R, type
services.msc, select OK. - For each service below, right‑click > Properties:
- Function Discovery Provider Host
- Function Discovery Resource Publication
- SSDP Discovery
- UPnP Device Host
- If Service status is not Running, select Start.
- Set Startup type to Automatic and select OK. These services are used by Network Explorer and Function Discovery to publish and find devices; if they stop or are set to Manual, the PC may randomly stop appearing.
- Check firewall/network reset if access is still intermittent
- Verify that no third‑party firewall is blocking file and printer sharing.
- As a last resort, use network reset on the problematic PC:
- Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
- Select Reset now and confirm.
- After restart, re‑set the network to Private and re‑enable Network discovery and File and printer sharing as above. Network reset reinstalls adapters and returns network settings to defaults, which can fix issues where a PC can reach the internet but not shared network resources.
- Verify sharing from the target PC
- On the Windows 11 Pro PC, share the required folders and confirm they are visible:
- Right‑click the folder > Show more options > Give access to > choose sharing options.
- To see what is actually shared, open File Explorer and type
\\localhostin the address bar.
If the PC still only appears sometimes, repeat the above steps on all workgroup PCs so they all use Private networks, have discovery and sharing enabled, and run the Function Discovery services automatically.
