Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Office 2016 Professional Plus is a volume license product intended for organizations and is not supported as a consumer "package" install on Mac like Home & Business or Microsoft 365.
For Mac, supported perpetual Office editions (such as Office 2016 Home & Business, Office 2019, Office 2021, or volume license builds) are installed using the dedicated Mac installer packages, not the Windows "setup" used by Professional Plus.
To install a supported Office 2016 build on Mac:
- Remove any existing Mac App Store Office apps if present:
- In Finder, open Applications.
- Control‑click Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and choose Move to Trash.
- Download the correct Office 2016 for Mac installer package:
- Use the Office 2016 for Mac Installer link: Office 2016 for Mac Installer.
- After download completes:
- Open Finder → Downloads.
- Double‑click Microsoft_Office_2016_Installer.pkg.
- Select Continue and follow the prompts.
- Enter the Mac login password when asked to complete installation.
- Activate Office 2016 for Mac:
- Open Word 2016 for Mac.
- On the Sign in to Activate Office screen, sign in with the work or school account associated with the license, or follow the activation flow appropriate for the license type.
If the purchased "Professional Plus" key came from a third‑party seller and does not correspond to a valid Mac volume license or Home & Business product, it cannot be used to run setup on macOS and should be disputed with the seller.
