If your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, no-one, not even Microsoft Support can find that key, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

BitLocker is working as designed to protect the data on the device. When Windows or firmware changes in certain ways (for example, after some updates), BitLocker can require the recovery key before allowing access. Without that key, the data on the drive cannot be unlocked or bypassed by anyone, including Microsoft.

To proceed, there are only two possible paths:

    1. Try to find the BitLocker recovery key BitLocker may have been enabled automatically (for example, by the device manufacturer or during setup), even if it was never configured manually. The recovery key might be stored in one of these locations:
      • Microsoft account: If the device was ever signed in with a personal Microsoft account, check from another device at the page described in Find your BitLocker recovery key.
      • Work or school account: If the device was ever joined to an organization (work/school), the key may be stored in that organization’s account:
        1. From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey
        2. Sign in with the work or school account
        3. Select Devices, expand the affected device
        4. Select View BitLocker Keys and match the Key ID shown on the blue BitLocker screen
      • Printed copy: Check any printed documents saved when BitLocker was first enabled.
      • USB flash drive: If the key was saved to a USB drive, plug it into another computer and look for a text file with the recovery key.
If the device is managed by an organization, contact its IT support to retrieve the key.
    2. If the recovery key cannot be found If the key cannot be located in any of the above places and the BitLocker screen appears before Windows sign-in, the encrypted data cannot be recovered. The only remaining option is to reset or reinstall Windows, which will erase all files on the encrypted drive:
      • Use Windows recovery options as described in Find your BitLocker recovery key and Windows devices for home users, businesses, and schools with Microsoft-managed updates to reset the device.
      • On some devices (for example, Surface), this is done by using a recovery image and performing a full recovery, which removes all existing data.

BitLocker cannot be turned off or bypassed without the recovery key. The protection is intentionally designed this way to keep data secure if a device is lost, stolen, or tampered with.
